Through October 31, 717 Gallery hosts “Color at Play,” a solo show featuring 30 new works by Louis Escobedo, a nationally-known master artist who is exclusively represented by 717 Gallery.
Escobedo was born in Sweetwater, Texas, and received a BFA in Advertising Art from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. During his time as an Illustrator, he received a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators in New York in 1981 and other awards from many organizations such as the Dallas Texas Visual Society. In 1985, he shifted his professional focus, moving from illustration to fine art.
During his fine art career, Escobedo exhibited in many galleries in the United States, including California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Illinois, Virginia, and Maryland.
Escobedo has received many awards for his artwork, most recently the 2014 Gold Medal in the 23rd Oil Painters of America (OPA) National Juried Exhibition Master Signature Division for his painting “Light Source.” The award included a cash prize of $25,000. As an Associate member of OPA, Escobedo vied along with 198 other artists for this year’s top honors. He received the OPA Gold Medal award twice since he began entering the OPA competitions.
Escobedo’s award-winning style intermingles color and abstract shapes. Realism and high-intensity color energize his subjects, which include landscapes, still lifes, and figures. He stays mindful that composition and value are the most important elements in a painting. “Sometimes I have to watch myself and not use color as a crutch,” he admits. “When it’s ready, color comes out to play. Sometimes it wants to play real fast, and I have to say, ‘Wait until I’m ready for you!’”
