On Friday, October 14 at 6 p.m., the Academy Art Museum will kick off its ARTober celebration with a lecture, “The National Gallery at 75” by Earl “Rusty” A. Powell, III, Director, National Gallery of Art. Powell is an American art historian and prior to joining the National Gallery of Art in 1992, he was director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. During his time at the National Gallery of Art, he has used the Museum’s collections in new and innovative ways. In addition to serving as its Director, he also currently serves as Chairman of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The lecture will offer a fascinating discussion of the National Gallery of Art’s first 75 years with a reception to follow. The cost is $75 a person and pre-registration is required.
ARTober: A Celebration of the Arts on the Eastern Shore is being held at the Museum through November 4. This month-long celebration of arts on the Eastern Shore will feature more than 40 classes, workshops, and demonstrations in the visual and performing arts, on topics such as garden photography, book arts, needle felting, Zentangle, storytelling, and even a Flamenco performance and dance lessons.
Starting this weekend, the Museum will offer a number of free events throughout the month of October including a Raku Workshop on October 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; St. Michaels Art League Open Meeting on October 17 with a workshop by Rita Curtis from 9 a.m. to 12 noon; a Yoga for Creativity class on October 17 at 6 p.m.; a class on Today’s Technology in Art Fabrication on October 22 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. or 3 to 4 p.m.; a Gamblin Artists’ Color Presentation & Artists’ Demonstration on October 27 at 4 p.m. and a Night at the Museum Part 2 class on October 28 from 6 to 9 p.m.
