Bluegrass icon Ralph Stanley and his Clinch Mountain Boys will set some toes tapping at the Avalon Theatre this Friday, February 24.
After 55 years in the business, he’s still the best banjo picker and tenor singer in bluegrass music, performing on more than 170 recordings including the song he sang for the soundtrack of the Coen Brothers’ O Brother Where art Thou? In 2002, Stanley earned two Grammys, one for his participation in O Brother.. , and the other for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. The latter achievement saw him triumph over fellow contenders Tim McGraw, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Lyle Lovett and Ryan Adams.
A year later, Stanley won his third Grammy, this one for Best Bluegrass Album for his collaboration with Jim Lauderdale on Lost In The Lonesome Pines. Drawing deeply from the musical wells of his beloved Appalachian heritage, Stanley has also penned many original songs by himself and with his brother, the late Carter Stanley, that have shaped the sound and heart of bluegrass for over five decades.
