Cleo Braver of Cottingham Farms will discuss the philosophy behind her venture at the Nov. 3 meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Herb Society.
The farm believes that organic farming methods can help change the current food supply system that is dominated by low-value, pesticide-heavy crops desiged for animal feed operations or utilized as biofuel.
According to Braver, Maryland imports most of its food from an average of 1,500 miles away. The goal of Cottingham Farms is to provide nutritionally dense, healthy produce locally.
While the society usually meets the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 7215 Ocean Gateway, Easton, this month’s meeting has been moved up to avoid conflict with the Waterfowl Festival. Meetings include an herbal potluck dinner, a short business meeting and a presentation on an herb-related topic. The theme for the November dinner is herbs and spice blends of the Spanish Empire.
CBHS was formed in 2002 to share knowledge of herbs with the local community. The group maintains the herb garden at Pickering Creek Audubon Center.
