District5, a wind quintet that specializes in new music and new transcriptions, will perform Sunday, April 8, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
The 3 p.m. concert at the church is free and open to the public.
The Washington, D.C.-based quintet will be in Easton next weekend, along with other chamber music ensembles, to perform in the annual Chesapeake Chamber Music Competition at the Avalon Theater on Saturday, April 7. The other chamber groups will also perform Sunday at public concerts in venues around Talbot County.
The quintet includes Laura Kaufman Mowry, flute; Allison Lowell, oboe; Zachary Gauvain, clarinet; Eddie Rumzis, bassoon, and Laura Crook Brisson, horn.
The group is a recipient of a 2016 CMA Classical Commissioning Grant with composer Elvis Sammoutis.
District5 recently has performed at the U.S. State Department, Library of Congress, the Barns at Wolf Trap, D.C. Kosciuszko Foundation and the Washington Arts Club.
Upcoming projects include the release of their first album — the complete Chopin preludes transcribed by David Plylar; a residency at Ithaca (N.Y.) College, and the launch of a new chamber music series in 2018-’19.
District5 enjoys sharing its passion for chamber music with young musicians. The have designed outreach programs for the D.C. Youth Orchestra Program, the American Youth Philharmonic and the UMBC Wind Ensemble among others.
The program at St. Mark’s will include works by Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin and Carlo Gesualdo and David Plylar.
The concert is supported by the Talbot Arts Council and based on a grant by the Maryland Arts Council. A love offering will be received to help cover expenses.
