Concerned Eastern Shore residents are encouraged to attend a free public forum to get the facts on immigration. A distinguished panel of Eastern Shore experts will cover the immigrant issue on the Shore and its impact on local services. Also, what’s driving the current immigrant wave from Central America will be covered.
The forum will be held at the Easton Fire House on Creamery Lane, 7 PM, Tuesday, August 19.
The forum keynoter and moderator will be Dr. Timothy Dunn, professor of sociology at Salisbury University, who will introduce the subject. Dr. Dunn has written several books and studies the issue.
The panel will consist of Leila Borreto-Krouse an immigration specialist from Salisbury who will provide an overview of the immigrant community and its impact on the region and legal implications. Dr. Kelly Griffith superintendent of Talbot County schools will discuss the immigrant impact on the county schools. Talbot County Sheriff Dallas Pope with explain the law enforcement pressures on the police. And Matthew Peters from the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center will give some insights he has acquired from the 13 years he lived in rural Guatemala and try to provide some reasons for the current immigrant surge from Central America.
Following the formal presentations the meeting will be open for questions from the audience.
The forum is presented by the Talbot County Republican Council an issue oriented group that conducts nonpartisan forums on vital issues of importance to residents of this region.
