The Gunston School’s rowing team hosted the Gunston Invitational Regatta for the second year in a row. This year’s field expanded to five visiting teams from the Annapolis Juniors Rowing Club (Annapolis), Freedom Rowers (Easton), Montgomery-Blair (Silver Spring), Notre Dame Prep (Towson), and Roland Park Country School (Baltimore).
Parents and fans descended onto Gunston’s countryside campus to watch the morning races along the banks of the Corsica River. Various events ranged from Men’s and Women’s eights to Men’s and Women’s fours.
“An event like this is a wonderful way to showcase The Gunston School as a rowing destination as well as a celebration of the great sport of rowing,” commented Gunston’s Director of Rowing Nicole Stimpson. “I knew when I first saw this venue that this location had tremendous potential to put Gunston on the map for crew.”
Racing began at 9am and continued until 12:30pm with a race every twenty minutes. The weather managed to cooperate throughout the morning with sunny skies and calm winds. Gunston placed 1st in the Men’s Novice 8, Men’s Junior Varsity 4, and the Men’s Varsity 4. For the Gunston Womens this event was their season opener. The Women’s Junior Varsity 4 came in second to a mixed men’s and women’s crew from Freedom Rowers while the Women’s Varsity 4 came out ahead in a 5 boat race against two Roland Park crews, Notre Dame Prep, and Blair.
Up next for Gunston is the Maryland State Championships in Chestertown, MD. The Gunston crews are aiming to break into this year’s Grand Finals. Gunston’s Women’s and Men’s Varsity 4’s place 4th and 5th in the State respectively at last year’s event and are on track to improve their position this year.
