This week’s feature is a property listed for $949,000 on River Road in Newcomb.
As an architect, I always enjoy featuring a house that has been designed by an another architect or designer. This house began as a rancher that the current owners transformed over the years with additions and renovations to both the house and the landscape.
The front of the house is a pleasing composition of the existing detached garage with its deep green walls and the house with its off-white lap siding with a projecting front wing clad in off-white vertical battens. The bright red door and copper roofed cupola also add architectural interest. I especially liked the rear elevation that faces Oak Creek with the deep green wing and garage as bookends to the off-white walls of the rest of the house. The vertical battened gable wing projection full of windows with transoms and a 12 x 36/ foot porch was a deft solid/void architectural touch.
I liked the spacious living room with its wall of glass doors to the porch, the fireplace and millwork for the TV, books and collections and the hardwood floors. The furnishings were a wonderful eclectic blend of modern and warm wood antique accents. A wide opening in the side wall connected the living room to the adjacent dining room and the kitchen offset from the dining room continues the open plan.
The master bedroom and the large family/multi-purpose room that is currently an office have pitched ceilings for architectural interest. The spacious master bedroom was my favorite room with its bay window complete with window seat for water views.
The landscape was carefully designed for bees and other pollinators with seasonal plantings including the summer blooms along the waterfront porch that my British friends would approve as the perfect herbaceous border!
