Bolingbroke Park is the new name of the nature area belonging to the Mid-Shore Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. The name reflects the property’s location on Bolingbroke Creek in Trappe and the 55 acres of park-like setting that has mature woods, marked walking trails, and a large pavilion.
The local Mid-Shore chapter represents Caroline, Talbot, Dorchester and Queen Anne Counties, and meets regularly at Bolingbroke Park.
The organization’s mission is to maintain, protect and restore natural resources through actions and education. Many local elementary school students visit the property each year with their teachers. And the chapter offers college scholarships to high school graduates who are planning to pursue degrees in environmental sciences. In addition, one scholarship is offered to a graduate student working and studying at the University of Maryland’s Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge.
An archery range has been developed and the chapter is planning to offer classes for young people.
The public is welcome to stroll the grounds of Bolingbroke Park, to learn about the trees and plants from the markers, and to kayak and canoe from the floating dock, all at no charge.
In addition, the pavilion is available for rent at very reasonable rates. The facility includes a large grill, a bar area, picnic tables to accommodate about 125, running water, electricity, fans, a speaker system, modern indoor toilets, roll down protective covers, and is handicapped accessible. The setting and accommodations lend themselves to reunions, weddings, barbecues, business meetings and other group activities.
