The average salaries paid teachers in each of Maryland’s 24 public school systems this year range between $76,903 and 53,457. The averages were developed through an annual analysis of professional salaries completed in October 2015 by the state education department.
The survey also shows the new statewide average of $66,456 is $979 above the previous year’s figure of $65,477. Montgomery County, the state’s largest school system, again enjoyed the top average with its $76,903 mean that represents a disparity of $23,446 over Dorchester County’s salaries. The Eastern Shore county again ranks 24th with $53,457.
Eight of twelve lowest average teacher salaries belong to the nine Shore counties. The sole exception is Cecil County in sixth place statewide with $63,548. Caroline County teachers earn $56,244. They are number 23 and $2,998 above Dorchester County teachers. Next comes Carroll County’s $57,110 with its teachers in 22nd place while Harford County is 21st with $57,244.
Shore subdivisions are situated in the next four slots. Teachers in number 20 Somerset County have a $57,360 average. Kent County teachers are 10th with $57,460. The state’s smallest school system with 2,029 students, its mean rose from 21st in 2014 resulting in an $889 gain.
At $58,341, Talbot County teachers’ salaries rank 18th. Wicomico County teachers place 17th with $58,989. Queen Anne’s teachers are 14th with $60,676 and just below Worcester County’s $61,485. Based on the calculation of the state’s latest available education wealth formula, Worcester and Talbot remain the state’s wealthiest jurisdictions.
