It’s fitting that country duo Doug and Telisha Williams come to NightCat on Saturday the 7th, Fourth of July weekend. The duo, who will bring their band with them, play a genre-bending style of music that incorporates all of the backbones of America’s musical creations, namely bluegrass, country, blues and rock and roll. Telisha’s vocals carry the twang of Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith, while Doug’s bluesy, country guitar conveys both rhythm and harmony, and the result is something that Rod Ames of No Depression Magazine says will “knock your socks off.”
Doug and Telisha Williams met in high school, where he was the drum major and she was the majorette. They went away separately to college but returned to their economically hard-hit hometown, married, and kept performing. Over ten years their music-making has progressed to a point where they can make a living appearing on the circuit of small music venues.
Wherever Doug and Telisha go they always make quick friends with their audience, pulling them right into their lives. “That’s what it’s all about for us,” says Doug, “being out there, playing on the road, meeting people. Everything else is just… everything else.” They’ve traveled from Florida to Oregon and Michigan to Texas, and played with some of their most beloved heroes – Lucinda Williams, Darrell Scott, Charlie Louvin, and Joe Ely – and been on stage at Anderson Fair, The Birchmere, The Carolina Theater, Godrey Daniels, Madison Square Park and Floydfest.
On stage, the duo has earned a reputation for a hot live show that have turned some of the headliners they’ve opened for into fans and admirers. One of those, Nashville musician Darrell Scott says, “Doug & Telisha Williams have the old-time, pre-70s country, mountain & honky-tonk road house music all blended together into their own whiskey, everyone should open the jar and have a pull.” Scott is right, the Williams’ songs and vocals are authentic slices of the small-town South, and their Appalachian voices are also fresh, challenging, and absolutely worthy of your close attention.
