The Third Annual Eastern Shore Sea Glass and Coastal Arts Festival will be held March 29, 2014, at Ophiuroidea, a coastal-inspired home décor store and art gallery located at 609 S. Talbot Street in St. Michaels, Maryland.
Hosted by store owners Shella Kirchner and Kim Hannon, the event started in 2011 as a way for the two to share their love of sea glass and to provide a showcase for area sea glass artisans. Sea glass is produced naturally when shards of glass are rolled and tossed by the ocean for years until the edges are smoothed and the piece takes on a frosted appearance.
This year, the festival has expanded to feature more than 25 artisans, from potters to painters, all of whom have created pieces of jewelry, home décor and art using sea glass. The artisans will come from as far away as Maine to share their artistic vision and display their wares.
A highlight of the 2014 festival will be an appearance by Richard LaMotte, President of the North American Sea Glass Association and noted sea glass expert. LaMotte will be on hand to sign copies of his book, Pure Sea Glass. He will also hold sea glass discussions with festival attendees from 12-3 pm. Festival attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite sea glass and pottery shards to learn more about their pieces from LaMotte and fellow beachcombers.
The festival will run from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the St Michaels School Campus parking lot and on streets nearby, as well as the town’s municipal parking lots. The festival will be held outdoors and will be a rain or shine event.
