Another of my favorite house styles is the American Four Square with its compact house design of four large rooms to a floor, two-and-one-half stories, center attic dormer and a large porch. The square shape provides a maximum amount of interior room space, to use a small urban lot like this house to its best advantage.
This house’s deep wrap-round porch is a great outdoor room and allows access to the porch from the kitchen for outdoor dining. The rear yard is private due to its mature landscaping and the brick patio extends the living space outdoors.
I like galley kitchens and I could imagine cooking in this one while friends relaxed at the island bar. The open floor plan and the large windows fill this house with sunlight.

Spy House of the Week is an ongoing series that selects a different home each week. The Spy’s Habitat editor Jennifer Martella makes these selections based exclusively on her experience as a architect.
Jennifer Martella has pursued her dual careers in architecture and real estate since she moved to the Eastern Shore in 2004. Her award winning work has ranged from revitalization projects to a collaboration with the Maya Lin Studio for the Children’s Defense Fund’s corporate retreat in her home state of Tennessee. Her passion for Italian food, wine and culture led her to Piazza Italian Market where she is the Director of Special Events, including weekly wine tastings and quarterly wine dinners.
