On Sunday, October 23, Christ Church in Easton will introduce the Christ Church String Quartet at the 11:00 morning service. Regular members of the newly formed quartet are violinists Lorraine Combs and Kimberly McCollum, violist Nevin Dawson, and cellist Carey Miller. Together, the quartet represents music teachers and performers as well as memberships in several orchestras. The resident ensemble is scheduled to perform monthly at the church and is the latest of a number of ensembles to be formed in the downtown congregation.
Music for Sunday’s debut appearance of the Christ Church String Quartet will include a number of selections arranged for string quartet including the opening allegro from Vivaldi’s popular Double Trumpet Concerto, RV 537. This bright, fanfare-like movement will be featured in the prelude beginning approximately ten minutes prior to the service time. Also to be featured is the ever delightful Canon in D Major by German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel. Originally scored for three violins and basso continuo, the piece is often heard minus the lovely Gigue which originally followed it. Sunday’s quartet will include the infrequently heard Gigue, making this a somewhat unique musical feast. Other pieces will include a Berceuse by Franz Schubert and a violin, cello, and piano trio arrangement of the Welsh folk tune, The Ashgrove arranged by Duane Funderburk.
