The town of Easton’s streets were paved in 1912 during Mayor Martin M. Higgins street paving project. Starting in 1880 many roads in the rural areas of Talbot County were covered with oyster shells. By 1920 the dirt road beds were improved by regular oiling as is shown in this postcard image! Facts: the “Easton Album” by Norman Harrington. This makes our present day back roads look terrific!! Lorraine Claggett says
Laurence G. Claggett included this picture from his post card collection in his book on Easton in the series Images of America. I remember he did not discover which road this is; but he comments in the book, ” The foreman does not seem to be particularly challenged by the rigors of his job, or concerned with the fate of his shoes”.
