Project Rewind- Talbot County: Dover Bridge, 1932 Easton, Md. Between 1904 and 1939 the Maryland State Roads Commission built at least 17 swing spans over navigable water. The 65 foot long central span of Dover Bridge swings opens for boats and barges that travel up and down the Choptank River. Swing spans were preferred by engineers because they were simple, reliable ( maybe when it was new?) and economical.
Built by J. E. Greiner Co., this 3 span steel Warren truss is one of 4 historic swing spans left in the state. Facts: “Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration “website. Photo from the H. Robins Hollyday Collection at THS.
