Talbot County Public Schools is pleased to announce that two of our local high school seniors have been chosen to represent their respective schools as members of the TCPS Board of Education for the 2017-2018 school year. The students were sworn in during the September 20 Board Meeting.
Jack Gill attends Saint Michaels High School where he has demonstrated leadership both in an out of the classroom. He has served his Student Government as Class President, was President of the Prom Committee, is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Friends Always Mentoring Others, and is President of the National Honor Society.
As a student athlete, Jack has earned Most Improved Awards for Soccer and Tennis, has been Captain of the Saints Basketball Team, and was selected as Most Valuable Player in both Basketball and Tennis during his junior year. He is also an accomplished musician, having earned a perfect score at the National Piano Guild for the last three years.
Jack has actively volunteered in the community for organizations such as Christmas in St. Michaels, the YMCA, and local youth soccer programs. This past summer, Jack had the opportunity to attend the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar, and he hopes to receive and accept an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, major in Nuclear Engineering and ultimately serve as a Submarine Warfare Officer.“I am grateful for this opportunity,” Gill said following his first meeting, “and I am really excited for this year.”
Kathryn (Katie) Spofford, a senior at Easton High School, also has an extensive resume. Her academic achievements include a broad range of Advanced Placement coursework, Principal’s Honor Roll, Honor Roll, Proficiency in English Award, Excellence in AP English Award, and Mind in Motion Scholar Athlete Award. She is a Member of the National Honor Society and the National Latin Honor Society in which she is serving as Secretary. She is a Teen Court Juror and is Student Government Secretary.
Katie has played both Junior Varsity and Varsity Soccer for Easton High, and participated in Varsity Indoor Track. She has been a member of the Chesapeake All Star Cheerleading Team, the High Voltage All Star Dance and Cheerleading Teams, the Talbot Figure Skating Team, the Bay Country Figure Skating Team, and the University of Delaware Figure Skating Team.
Katie’s other leadership experiences include attending AIA Maryland Girls’ State, where she was elected Chairwoman of the Committee on Finances, President of the County Commissioners and Governor of ALA MD Girls’ State 2017. She was also a Speaker at a youth leadership conference in Ocean City. She volunteers for Talbot Interfaith Shelter, National Honor Society Tutoring, Service Dog Training and the Bay Bridge Run. She recently served as an intern to Congressman Andy Harris in his Salisbury office.
“I am looking forward to my final year at Easton High School, and I plan to be a very involved member of our school community,” says Katie. “I’m super excited to serve as student Board Member this year, and Go Warriors!”
Jack and Katie will attend the monthly Board of Ed meetings and will periodically report to the Board on important happenings at their schools.
