Those engaged in the ongoing conversation about the fate of the “Talbot Boys” statue on the County’s Courthouse lawn might take some comfort that other communities across the country are experiencing similar challenges.
One example of this can be found in Helena, MT. Eric Stern, the Deputy Secretary of State there, contributed the following article to Salon.com which describes the current debate taking place in the state’s capital:
There is a stone fountain that sits in a flower bed in a municipal park in Helena, Montana. Until a few weeks ago, few Helenans had ever paid much attention to it, if they even knew it existed at all, which most did not. But now the fountain is the subject of a loud debate, because engraved on the side of it are the words “By the United Daughters of the Confederacy …… In Loving Memory of our Confederate Soldiers.”
