The Tidewater Singers will present a Spring Pops Concert on Friday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral in Easton and on Saturday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. at The Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford.
Under the direction of William Thomas, the Tidewater Singers are a select group of professional and amateur singers founded in 2001. The goal is to bring varied and exciting quality choral music to the Eastern Shore.
The Tidewater Singers concert will feature madrigals, a medley from Les Misérables, and Gershwin favorites. The choir will perform both a cappella and accompanied by Lyn Banghart on piano.
Arrangements from Les Misérables include popular pieces such as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Bring Him Home,” and “Do You Hear the People Sing?” Among the Gershwin arrangements are “Summertime” and “Embraceable You”. The concert will also feature the imaginative and compelling work of Eric Whitacre including “Water Night” based on the poetry of Octavio Paz and the fun and fanciful “Animal Crackers”.
Now in his ninth season as artistic director of The Tidewater Singers, Thomas is associate professor of music at Chesapeake College. Previously he directed the choirs at Easton High School and at Christ Church (Episcopal) in St. Michaels.
Commenting on the concert, Thomas said, “This concert offers a wide range of popular and entertaining music from delightful madrigals to sweeping and inspiring songs of Broadway.”
Advance tickets for the Easton performance on Friday, May 12, may be purchased online at www.tidewatersingers.org and at Cracker Jacks in Easton and Reeser’s Pharmacy in St. Michaels. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and students are free. Trinity Cathedral is located at 315 Goldsborough Street.
The Oxford performance on Saturday, May 13, features a goodwill offering at The Church of the Holy Trinity. Reservations may be made at 1-888-752-0023 or [email protected].
The Tidewater Singers gratefully acknowledges the funding it has received from the Talbot County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council, an agency dedicated to cultivating a vibrant cultural community where the arts thrive.
