From October 5 to November 6, Troika Gallery presents a featured show of exciting new works by Baltimore artist, Matt Zoll. This artist’s highly detailed still lives combine an old master approach with modern sensibilities. Using Old Masters’ techniques, Zoll mixes powdered pigments with black oil to create extraordinary realism characterized by brilliance, remarkable color and vibrancy. The Flemish medium, also made in the studio, allows the artist to produce a rich luster and an intense luminosity. Zoll’s paintings are rich in color and drama with an amazing attention to detail. It’s no wonder his group and one-man shows have had overwhelming response from collectors and art enthusiasts.
Matt Zoll has been painting professionally for twenty years and teaching since 1991. While attending the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore, Zoll was taught the techniques of the Flemish Masters. He studied under legendary artist and educator, Ann Schuler, along with artists Will Wilson, and Gerome Atherholt. Zoll has an appreciation for drawing and still life, insisting that they are the foundation of all art. “Still life is one of the most valuable lessons in painting,” he says, “as composition, form, value, and lighting are crucial fundamental elements needed to pursue other subjects such as portraits and figures.” Zoll takes pride in teaching and passing on the traditional lessons of realism. He currently exhibits his work in Los Angeles, California and Easton, Maryland.
Born in Baltimore on October 13, 1968, Zoll became fascinated with fine art, particularly realism, from a very early age. After taking private art lessons from artist Bob Browne, Zoll enrolled at the Schuler School of Fine Arts in 1988, where he trained in anatomy, watercolor, cast drawing, sculpture, portraiture, and still life. Eventually, he began concentrating on the painstaking techniques of still life and classical realism. While studying at the Schuler School, Zoll won many art competitions, such as the prestigious United States Art Competition.
After graduating from the Schuler School in 1991, Zoll opened his own school to continue teaching the techniques used by the Old Masters with the use of black oil rediscovered by Jacques Maroger.
Troika Gallery will host an Opening Reception on Friday, October 5 from 5-8:30pm during Easton’s First Friday Gallery Walk. Zoll will be present to discuss his art and a Q&A session will begin at 7pm.
