UM Center for Diabetes & Endocrinology at UM Shore Regional Health has welcomed Beakal Eshete, as lead educator, Trish Rosenberry, regional director, specialty clinics for UM Shore Regional Health has announced.
Eshete, who goes by “BK,” joined the Center team in mid-December. She most recently served as a nurse diabetes educator for the Inova Center for Wellness and Metabolic Health in Fairfax, Virginia, working with patients who have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes teaching diabetes self-management classes. Previously, she worked for Prince George’s Correctional Center Medical Unit caring for medical and psychiatric patients.
Eshete earned her associate degree in nursing from Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland in 2012 and her RN-BSN degree from Chamberlain College of Nursing in Arlington, VA in 2015. She is a certified diabetes educator (CDE).
The University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology is the only diabetes specialty clinic on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The Center’s mission is to provide the highest level of comprehensive diabetes care through prevention, treatment, education and research. The Center provides services in the Outpatient Center in UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, and also in the Multispecialty Clinic in UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. The diabetes educators work with patients who have diabetes and pre-diabetes, both one on one and in group settings, to help them learn how to control diabetes symptoms, avoid complications from the disease and manage their health. Offerings include a three-session class, Diabetes Self-Management, every month in both Chestertown and Easton, and monthly support groups in Cambridge, Chestertown, Denton and Easton. Classes require a referral for a physician, and support groups are open to family members and caregivers as well as patients.
