Sue Ellen Thompson to Lecture on Jane Kenyon at Easton Library
On Monday, November 13, at 6:00 p.m., in the Easton branch of the Talbot County Free Library, Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet and teacher Sue Ellen Thompson will give a lecture entitled “Marriage, Metaphor, and Mortality: The Poetry of Jane Kenyon.” Kenyon only published four collections of poetry, but her reputation and influence, especially following her death from leukemia at the age of 47, have continued to grow. Today she is recognized as one of America’s premier lyric poets.
Kenyon’s first mentor was Donald Hall, the poet and college professor who later became her husband. She moved with him to his ancestral home in New Hampshire, where they lived and wrote for 20 years. At first Kenyon chafed at being seen as the wife of an older and far more accomplished poet, rather than as an artist in her own right. But after finding a “master” in the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, Kenyon emerged from her husband’s shadow and began publishing poems acclaimed for their lyric intensity and reliance on “the natural object” to illuminate complex human emotions.
Kenyon struggled with depression throughout her life, and Thompson’s program will explore the impact that this illness and her marriage to a future U.S. Poet Laureate had on her work. Several of her poems will be read and discussed, with particular attention paid to their plainspoken diction and use of metaphors from the natural world. A PowerPoint presentation will accompany the lecture, with photographs of Kenyon and Hall and clips from Bill Moyers’ Emmy Award-winning documentary, “Donald Hall and Jane Kenyon: A Life in Poetry.”
Sue Ellen Thompson is the author of five books of poetry and the editor of a major anthology of contemporary American poetry. She has taught at several colleges and universities, among them Middlebury, Wesleyan, Central Connecticut State University, Binghamton University, and the University of Delaware. Her poems have been read by Garrison Keillor on NPR and featured in the Pushcart Prize and Best American Poetry anthologies. An instructor at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda, she was the recipient of the 2010 Maryland Author Award from the Maryland Library Association. Thompson’s lecture is supported with funds from the Talbot County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council.
All library programs are free and open to the public. Patrons do not need to pre-register to attend this lecture. For more information, please call the library at 410-822-1626, or visit www.tcfl.org.

The Long Walk Home
On Thursday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m., in the Easton branch of the Talbot County Free Library, Robert Messick will talk about the 2,190 mile hike he made along the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine as a fundraiser for Easton’s Talbot Interfaith Shelter. Messick will share hardships and joys encountered while walking 5 million steps through 14 states, his trek taking him across elevations that amounted, in toto, to 16 ascents and descents of Mt. Everest. He will tell his stories using a multi-media presentation of photos and videos he took along the trail.
A native of Easton, Messick grew up with an appreciation for the out-of-doors—boating and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, including crewing on and skippering Chesapeake Bay Sailing Log Canoes, among other racing sailboats. After graduating from Santa Clara University Law School in California, he was appointed a Trial Attorney with the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, representing the Internal Revenue Service in complex tax litigation. When he entered private practice in Maryland, he assisted clients in tax and estate planning, trust and estate administration, and tax compliance. Messick has two adult children, Marisa and Rob, who also enjoy the out-of-doors and backpacking. He lives in St. Michaels with his partner, Lynda Barrow. Both Robert and Lynda teach Yoga and Ayurveda, having received advanced training in both subjects.
All library programs are free and open to the public. Patrons do not need to pre-register for this program. For more information, please call the library at 410-833-1626, or visit www.tcfl.org.
