Internationally recognized artist, workshop instructor and author, Robert Liberace will hold a workshop focusing on painting the figure in costume and landscape, exploring the dynamic power of the brush stroke with special focus on alla-prima portraiture. (Alla – prima is a style of painting where, instead of building colors up with layers or glazing over an underpainting, the painting is completed while the paint is still wet.)
By looking at artists such as Frans Hals who revolutionized art through bravura brushwork to Joaquin Sorolla who unleashed color with unrivaled abandon, students will have the opportunity to create portraits with the inspiration of some of history’s great painterly methods. Using the fresh and lively approach of the alla prima technique and a rich array of colors, students will follow a step-by-step system which will allow them to compose portraits with great energy and calligraphic beauty. Each day a particular color palette and technique demonstration will be featured. If weather permits. we will venture outside during the last afternoon to explore Sorolla’s approach to plein air portraiture and his method of mass simplification and color amplification.
