The Friends of St. John’s Chapel will again be offering the Dr. Joyce Cummings Hogan Memorial Scholarship this year. This four-year scholarship may be up to $15,000 per year and recognizes Dr. Hogan’s legacy of valuing education, achievement, and persistence in the face of adversity. It will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who attended Tilghman Elementary School for at least three years and who will be a full-time freshman attending a four-year college in the fall of 2026. Selections will be made from students meeting all criteria who submit a completed application by April 1, 2026.
Dr. Hogan, the daughter of Sam and Dorothy Cummings, was born in Talbot County, Maryland and graduated from Tilghman Elementary and Easton High School. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Towson State and Masters and Doctorate degrees from the University of MD College Park. Dr. Hogan went on to become an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and then a Professor of Psychology at the University of Tulsa. She was a nationally recognized expert in designing physical ability tests for employment that were fair and job-related. Her work opened doors for generations of women and men to be considered for employment from which they previously would have been excluded.
Scholarship applications are available at the Guidance Counselor Offices of St. Michaels, Easton and Saints Peter & Paul High Schools. Applications must be submitted to the Friends of St. John’s Chapel Scholarship Committee. P.O. Box 142, Tilghman, Maryland 21671 by April 1, 2026. The award will be presented to the recipient at the 2025-2026 high school awards celebration.
