Easton Village’s range of architectural styles of its houses from a Pattern Book created for the neighborhood, trees that have matured and the brick sidewalks have created a very appealing neighborhood that is dotted with various green spaces. This charming bungalow enjoys a prime position on a corner lot with a side yard for additional privacy. Both the front porch with its long vista across Hollyday Park and a deck at the side of the house are delightful outdoor rooms for relaxation. On the day of my visit, there were patches of snow left from our second snowfall. I am grateful to the Listing Agent who shared this photograph of the side elevation in all its springtime splendor to remind us that spring will soon come. The matured colorful plantings along the low wall that separates the sidewalk from the side yard also provide privacy for the deck tucked between the two-story and one-story parts of the house.
Along the side wall of the two-story part of the house, a meandering path of large stones inset into the ground cover that is thick as carpet passes by the crape myrtle and lower plants that add scale, color and texture to the landscape.
To begin my tour of the house, I walked up the brick sidewalk and the wide wood steps that welcome guests. As I stood on the porch, I enjoyed the elevated view of Hollyday Park’s semicircular shape which creates a streetscape of houses that are not horizontally aligned with each other. This house’s porch has privacy from overlooking the front yard of the next house instead of looking through the house’s porch.
The two-room wide, six room deep floor plan is zoned very well with the foyer opening into a hall that varies in width and blends into adjoining rooms. From the front door with its custom glass panel, there is a clear vista through the house to the rear door leading to the attached garage. The beautiful wood floors, trimwork that creates a wainscot and moldings below the ceiling are graceful touches that add great character.
Next to the foyer is a room furnished as a study with the interior corner of the room angled and infilled with a pair of French doors for transparency. I could well imagine how pleasant it would be to take a break from computer work and swivel around in the ergonomic chair for a view across Hollyday Park. Even better would be to take a break on the classic Eames chair and ottoman that complements the sleek lines of the wood workstation! Behind the study is a powder room off the hall.
On the other side of the foyer is an elegant formal dining room with a white wainscot below accent walls of blue. The double unit window overlooks the front porch and the hutch with its glass fronted upper doors adds transparency to the side wall. The beautiful Queen Anne table and chairs are anchored by the large Oriental rug below the delicate Venetian glass chandelier that set the scene for memorable family occasions
Past the stair to the second floor is this charming living room with its focal points of both the gas log fireplace flanked by single windows and the custom artisan bespoke millwork between the living room and the adjacent morning room. The millwork design incorporates glass shelves that float between side supports for display of family treasures and allows sunlight to filter into each space to maintain clear vistas between the rooms.
The adjacent morning room is aptly named since it captures the early morning sunlight; in the 18th and 19th century, the lady of the house would use their morning room for eating breakfast, keeping up with correspondence or planning meals. This spacious room with the side wall infilled with long windows and a door to the adjacent deck for easy indoor-outdoor flow is a great family gathering space.
The living room is also opposite the kitchen as part of the living room-kitchen-morning room hub of the house. The subtle tones of the large rug, upholstered pieces and the accents of the wood pieces are very appealing.
The kitchen would please any gourmet with its white cabinetry, granite countertops, glass tile backsplash and upgraded stainless steel appliances and wood floors. The large island is an extra worksurface and can accommodate several chairs for breakfast or informal meals. I especially admired the custom pendant lighting fixtures over the island.
A short hall between the kitchen and the dining room contains this butler’s pantry opposite the laundry. The butler pantry is a seamless transition to the kitchen since it shares the same cabinetry style, countertop and backsplash and flooring.
The laundry has abundant storage space and the sink and countertop can accommodate items that must be hand washed and laid flat for drying. The elevated washer and dryer above open storage units makes doing laundry less of a chore.
The primary ensuite is located at the quiet rear corner of the house. The spacious bedroom is a serene retreat with the interior design of subtle neutral tones with accents of the light blue walls and the bedding. The two long windows that flank the bed do not have views of windows in the neighbor’s side wall so there is complete privacy. The side doors lead to a deep cedar lined walk-in closet.
The spacious primary bath opens into the dual lavatory area opposite the tub and separate shower area. I admired the herringbone pattern of the flooring and the pebble surface of the shower floor whose non-slip surfaces also add color and texture to the white finishes of the walls and cabinetry.
The stair to the second floor opens into this spacious family room with abundant sunlight from the four windows of the shed dormer overlooking the landscape of Hollyday Park. With space for a large screen TV and plenty of room for seating, this room is the perfect setting for family movie nights, board games, puzzles, etc.
Next to the family room is a utility/storage room, two large guest bedrooms at each rear corner of the second floor for quiet and privacy and a hall bath. The double window brings ample daylight into this bedroom and I admired the quilt that is a lovely wall hanging.
