Temple B’nai Israel—the Satell Center for Jewish Life on the Eastern Shore—is presenting an evening of Jewish humor on Saturday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Temple, 7199 Tristan Drive, Easton, preceded by a champagne reception at 7:00 p.m.
The program is presented by Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg, a lifelong student of Jewish humor through the ages, a humorist, and an engaging entertainer. In this 75-minute stand-up routine, “4000 Years from Sarah to Seinfeld,” he will share insights into the various genres of Jewish humor, offering numerous examples along the way.
Why have so many American comedians been Jewish?
“There is nothing so sacred that we cannot joke about it,” Rabbi Arnie says. “Our history is such that we weren’t allowed to engage in the typical professions. We weren’t allowed to attend university. We weren’t allowed to own land. About the only thing we were allowed to do was to be merchants or entertainers.”
He explains that when Jews came to America, there was finally a level playing field, and “We let our talents shine, which is why we have been so over-represented in that field.”
