On February 28, the Tidewater Rotary Club hosted a high-impact food packing day as part of its FOLKS (Feeding Our Local Kids & Seniors) initiative to combat food insecurity in Talbot County. Nearly 40 volunteers gathered at the Easton Airport ACE Center to assemble 2,268 meal packets containing a total of 13,608 servings of fortified macaroni and cheese or rice and beans with vegetables.
The meal packets will be distributed to all Talbot County elementary schools, local food pantries, and Meals on Wheels, ensuring nutritious, easy-to-prepare food reaches children, families, and seniors who need it most.
The FOLKS initiative extends beyond meal packing. In the coming months, the program will provide 250 new crockpots to local families, helping them prepare healthy meals at home. Additionally, FOLKS is funding the purchase of tens of thousands of pounds of food for area food pantries to further strengthen the local safety net.
The initiative is made possible through generous community support and proceeds from the club’s popular fundraisers, including Bowling Night and the upcoming Trivia Night. Last week at Easton Bowl, dozens of participants enjoyed friendly competition while helping “strike out hunger.” The next fundraising event, Trivia Night, is scheduled for May 13 at 4 Dogs Brewing Company & Pub.
“It’s always a great day when people come together in support of the community,” said Rick Hughes. “Food insecurity is the polite way of saying that many of our neighbors, kids, and families are hungry and don’t have the resources to know where their next meal is coming from. It is an invisible problem, and Tidewater Rotary is making strides to raise awareness and funds. We invite everyone who can to step up and help in any way they can.”

If anyone is wondering why people are starving in Talbot County, read the draft Economic Development Plan. It worships small “scale”, “character”, and “identity” while housing prices explode and the cost of living crushes working families. Growth is boxed into a few small zones, mostly tied to tourism and speculative “innovation,” while no serious new areas are opened for job creation. The towns don’t want density. The county won’t allow expansion elsewhere. That is designed to be a closed system.
They deliberately restrict land, businesses, industry, and housing, and then act puzzled when people are starving. Tourism is seasonal. Workshops and branding campaigns don’t feed families. Real wage growth comes from allowing businesses to expand and new employment centers to form. Instead, the economic plan idolizes scenery and incumbents. It reads like a manual for preserving comfort at the top while freezing everyone else out. Hunger is the outcome of policy choices like this.
With all due respect to Ms. Smith, practically nothing she wrote deals with the real issues that cause hunger in America, much less Talbot County. Anyone can ask multiple free AI programs and there will not be a word about Talbot County’s draft Economic Development Program as a cause for hunger. More serious is Ms. Smith’s false claim that “real wage growth,” comes from unfettered Capitalism.
The Tidewater Rotary Club is feeding people. Not holding workshops and branding campaigns. They deserve thanks and respect, not simplistic criticisms based on no empirical data whatsoever.
No one is criticizing Rotary. Feeding people matters. But packing meals is emergency response. It does not explain why demand keeps rising in a county with one of the highest costs of living in Maryland and median home prices near half a million dollars.
I’m not for “unfettered capitalism.” I’m for math. Wages struggle to keep pace with living costs because housing supply is constrained, land for business expansion is limited, and much of the job base is seasonal tourism. That pressure shows up at food pantries. We can thank Rotary and still question whether our economic policies are producing enough year-round opportunity. Relief is necessary. Structural reform is also necessary. Ignoring that connection guarantees that we will need many more meal-packing events .
