As part of its yearlong 35th Anniversary celebration, Londonderry on the Tred Avon marked a meaningful milestone with a community-wide time capsule ceremony on March 24th, bringing together residents and team members to reflect on the legacy of this unique, resident-owned community and to preserve a snapshot of life today for future generations.
Since its founding, Londonderry has offered a distinctive approach to retirement living, one rooted in resident ownership, active engagement, and a shared commitment to community. Over the past 35 years, it has grown into one of the Eastern Shore’s most sought-after waterfront communities, where residents don’t just live, they shape the experience.
The time capsule ceremony reflected that spirit.
Held at the Londonderry Clubhouse, the event opened with remarks from CEO Christine Harrington, who highlighted the significance of the anniversary year and the community’s continued evolution.
“As we celebrate 35 years, this moment invites us to reflect on where we’ve been, appreciate what we’ve built together, and look ahead to what comes next,” said Harrington. “This time capsule captures not just a moment in time, but the spirit of a community that has always been defined by its residents.”
The program featured a blend of heartfelt reflection and lighthearted moments, including a custom-written poem, created with the help of AI as a sign of the times, and read by resident Kaye Dutrow, that paid tribute to Londonderry’s history and character in a uniquely modern way.
Residents Pat Lewers and Margaret Bryan, who at 102 years old represents a remarkable living connection to history, shared personal reflections, alongside Board Member Bruce Kranz. Their remarks, paired with reflections from both a long-tenured team member and one of the newest staff members, brought together the voices of Londonderry’s past, present, and future.
The capsule itself reflects that same balance, preserving both meaningful milestones and the everyday details that define life in 2026. Among the items included are a COVID test with explanation, a Downton Abbey souvenir, an Android cell phone, a CD from a resident exercise class, beer bottle labels, a ukulele pick, a cassette tape, and a snapshot of current prices of everyday goods. The capsule also includes resident and staff reflections, community publications, a T-shirt featuring resident names, and a group photo from the ceremony.
Guests marked the occasion with special clock-themed cookies, a thoughtful nod to the passage of time and the significance of preserving it.
The time capsule has been sealed and will remain closed until 2061, when future generations will have the opportunity to rediscover this moment in Londonderry’s history. Visitors to the community can view a commemorative plaque marking the capsule’s location inside the Clubhouse.
The time capsule is just one of many initiatives planned throughout Londonderry’s 35th Anniversary year, which also includes community storytelling, historical displays, and opportunities to reflect on the people and moments that have shaped the community since its founding.
As Londonderry looks ahead, the time capsule stands as both a celebration and a promise, honoring 35 years of resident-led living while preserving the story for those who will call it home in the decades to come.
