One More Shooting.
Early this morning, with the shooting the night before on our minds, my wife and I walked to Holy Trinity Church and fortunately were led to reflect on an enlightening metaphor. The Shepherd—biblically the Good Shepherd.
Father Kevin Cross spoke of learning about the shepherding of sheep while living in New Brunswick, Canada. He got to know real shepherds and observed their leadership. One shepherd stood out. He was frequently recognized and rewarded for his herdmanship.
I was thinking, why not a border collie? But, beyond a wonderful assistant, a dog has one role—too herd. A good shepherd many.
In my research I learned that the correct spelling of Shepard when referring to raising sheep is shepherd. And a good shepherd has an all-encompassing role: “A shepherd is a livestock caretaker who tends, herds, feeds, and protects a flock of sheep, ensuring their health and safety.” His stewardship is recognized by the sheep and his flock more tranquil and healthy.
So is this useful way to think about the best of human leadership? The Good Shepherd of the Bible is both a leader and caregiver. Guided, if you will, by the Second Commandment—“love thy neighbor.” Is being a good shepherd even aspirational in the 21st Century?
Is it only those who join the Future Farmers of America or the 4-H (Head, Heart, Hands, Health) who are likely to know the attributes of good shepherding? The fruits of good animal husbandry.
Anyway, as you think of the volatile times in which we live perhaps you too will find this an insightful metaphor. Maybe it should be aspirational. Many of us in one way or another are called on to be shepherds. How many of us measure up?

I am so often inspired by the insights and inspiration of Father Kevin’s sermons. He is a thoughtful and deep reader and so very wise. He is worth a visit to the little Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford, Maryland. He has the Christ-light.
