Choptank Riverkeeper and Director of Riverkeeper Programs, Matt Pluta, spoke to members of the Rotary Club of Cambridge providing them with a Choptank River Report Card for 2025. During his talk, Matt highlighted a variety points of the River and its tributaries. He shared a number areas where water quality is a problem. He stated, “although there are still problem areas, in 2025 water quality improved for all Choptank tributaries. Overall, 2025 showed strong nitrogen and algae improvements but phosphorus and clarity remain concerns.”
Matt said he is dedicated to safeguarding the long-term health of the river, guarding against illegal and harmful pollution. He holds a degree in biology and environmental studies from Penn State University as well as an advanced degree in environmental policy. Coming to the Eastern Shore from the Great Lakes Region, he brings his passion for clean water and outdoor recreation. In 2015, Matt joined the ShoreRiver’s team and is the representative on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’s Oyster Advisory Committee, among other Committees.
