The Talbot County Health Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Rachel Leahy, LEHS, as Director of Environmental Health. Leahy, who has served as Acting Director, brings extensive experience in public health education, regulatory compliance, and community service to the permanent role.
In her position as Director, Leahy oversees the Office of Environmental Health’s broad scope of public health protection services across Talbot County. These vital programs include monitoring wells and safe drinking water, managing septic systems and sewage regulations, conducting food safety inspections, regulating public pools and spas, issuing open burn permits, and managing animal bite and rabies control initiatives.
“Ms. Leahy brings valuable experience, and a strong commitment to protecting the health and well-being of our community. Her leadership will be instrumental in advancing our environmental health programs, strengthening public health protections, and ensuring that we continue to provide responsive and effective services to the residents we serve,” said Dr. Fahmi Fahmi, Health Officer for Talbot County. “Environmental health plays a critical role in preventing disease and promoting healthy communities. From food safety and sanitation to inspections, environmental protections, and community education, this work directly impacts the quality of life of our residents.”
Under Leahy’s leadership, the Office of Environmental Health will continue its commitment to enforcing state environmental laws, managing local permitting processes, and maintaining 24/7 emergency response for critical environmental concerns across the county.
