For more than two decades, Benedictine’s Casey Townsend has helped people with developmental disabilities build fuller, more independent lives. Her work centers on a simple idea: a meaningful day looks different for each person, whether that means working, volunteering, spending time with friends, or discovering something new.
That philosophy led to an unusual partnership when a Benedictine resident named Nick was struggling with a major change in his life. Seeking a healthy way for him to release frustration and build confidence, the staff reached out to John Givens, a local martial arts instructor and owner of The Lab. What began as an experiment soon became something much more, as Nick learned new skills, developed trust, and gradually walked into the studio with a confidence he had not had before..
In this Spy conversation, we hear how that experience changed more than one life. It is a story about patience, creativity, and the importance of looking beyond traditional programs to find what works for each individual. It is also a reminder that true community inclusion depends on all of us being willing to open the door a little wider.
