The Talbot County Democratic Forum and Talbot Indivisible will welcome Jake Day, Maryland Secretary of Housing and Community Development, as the featured speaker for a First Friday Hot Topics program on Friday, September 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Easton, located at 7401 Ocean Gateway (U.S. Route 50), Easton.
The event is free and open to the public and will provide attendees with an opportunity to hear firsthand about Maryland’s efforts to expand affordable housing, strengthen communities, and promote economic development across the state.
As Secretary of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development and a member of Governor Wes Moore’s Cabinet, Secretary Day serves as the Governor’s senior advisor on housing and place-based economic development. He is also Chief Executive Officer of the State’s housing finance agency, overseeing $3 billion in annual spending, managing more than $7 billion in assets, and leading a team of approximately 500 state officials.
Under Secretary Day’s leadership, Maryland has:
- Created or preserved more than 10,000 affordable housing units
- Generated more than $55 billion in economic impact
- Supported the creation of 106,000 full-time jobs.
- Established the nation’s first subcabinet-level division dedicated to addressing the lasting effects of racially motivated disinvestment and redlining.
A native of Salisbury, Secretary Day previously served as the 28th Mayor of Salisbury, where he earned statewide recognition for revitalization and smart growth initiatives. Before joining Governor Moore’s administration, he served as Director of the Center for Towns, using urban design and planning to help communities become more vibrant and sustainable. He also served as President of the Maryland Municipal League, representing Maryland’s 160 cities and towns.
During his presentation, Secretary Day will discuss Maryland’s ongoing efforts to address rising housing costs, highlight major housing and community development initiatives underway across the state, and explain programs and assistance available through the Department of Housing and Community Development. A question-and-answer session will follow his remarks.
