What was on the dinner table in Colonial Maryland? How did Marylanders cook, dine, and turn the ingredients available to them into the dishes that became part of the region’s culinary story?
The Oxford Community Center and The Oxford Museum invite the community to discover the answers—and enjoy a taste of history along the way—at “Dining in Colonial Maryland” on Thursday, September 10, at 5:00 p.m.
The evening will feature cookbook author and historian Joyce M. White, who will bring Maryland’s culinary past to life through an engaging presentation exploring food and dining in the colonial era.
And this is one history program guests won’t experience only by listening: a food tasting is included.
White, whose A Taste of History work celebrates the connection between food and the past, will give guests an opportunity to consider history through a deliciously different lens. Food can reveal how people lived, what resources they had available, and the traditions that shaped everyday life—and this special program offers the chance to explore that history one bite at a time.
“Food has an incredible ability to connect us to another time and place,” said Liza Ledford, Executive Director of the Oxford Community Center.
“This evening combines history, storytelling, and tasting in a way that makes the past feel wonderfully immediate. We’re delighted to partner with the OCC and welcome Joyce White to Oxford,” said Phyllis Rambo, President of the Oxford Museum Board.
“We are all watching, reading and learning a lot about 18th century America this year, but one fundamental aspect of everyday life in the colonies is usually overlooked. What did these people eat? How did they survive without grocery stores, refrigeration, microwave ovens and take-out pizza? Historian Joyce White is the perfect guide to help us explore the essentials and the indulgences of Colonial foodways. The presentation should be delicious!” said Oxford Museum Curator Stuart Parnes.
