For many long years, the voice of the people of the First District of Maryland has not been heard in the U.S. House of Representatives. Our current congressman, Andy Harris, has been absent from the area for most of his years in Congress.
Dan Schwartz is a strong advocate for the Eastern Shore. Now is your chance to meet him, ask him questions, and judge for yourself. On Sunday, September 27, Dan will be at St. Paul’s Church, 225 Morris Street, in Oxford, between 2 and 3:30 p.m.
So why does Dan deserve your vote to represent the Eastern Shore?
Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Representative Jamie Raskin, Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen, and our former Republican District 1 Congressman Wayne Gilchrest have all endorsed him.
For more than 14 years, Dan has worked with state and federal regulators to protect consumers from financial misconduct and abuse. If elected, Dan will continue this priority.
Dan has received more than a million dollars in campaign contributions from individuals. And unlike Andy, Dan does not accept PAC and corporate money.
When you listen to Dan, you will hear him talk about what’s important to the Eastern Shore. On the campaign trail, Dan has indicated that he wants to repeal cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, long-term care, SNAP, and community grants that have hit the Eastern Shore hard. He also wants to hold insurance companies accountable for rising premiums despite their record profits.
Dan advocates bipartisan immigration reform legislation that both protects asylum seekers and secures our borders.
In contrast, Andy has angered many constituents by refusing to hold in-person town hall meetings. Instead, he conducts carefully orchestrated phone calls and closed events. Plus, Andy continues to show extreme support for all things MAGA, including his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and restrict American’s voting rights.
As Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, Harris has supported efforts which have disrupted federal and state governance through leadership ousters, mass firings of competent career staff, government shutdown threats, and legislative obstructions.
As a virtually absentee Congressman, Andy has had no time to spend on the Easten Shore but somehow found time to make multiple trips to Hungary in support of Viktor Orban.
The League of Conservation Voters has rated Andy Harris Zero Percent on the congressional National Environmental Scorecard.
The Trump/Harris policies and legislation causing the high cost of fertilizer and fuel, loss of Chinese and other overseas agricultural customers, and loss of affordable immigrant labor, have badly hurt Eastern Shore farmers.
Dan is calling out Andy’s “no show” record on the Eastern Shore—and is ready to debate him so we can judge for ourselves who would better represent us.
Be sure to mark your calendars, and plan to attend Dan’s “Meet and Greet” at St. Paul’s Church in Oxford on Sunday, September 27, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and learn more about how Dan plans to represent us in Washington.

Thank you, Maria – your article clearly shows why we called Dr. Harris “Dr. No” when we were working on health care issue in the Maryland Legislature. If it was good for the people of Maryland, it was a “No!” from Senator Harris when he was in Annapolis.
Susan, thanks for your comment. Much appreciated. Difficult to understand why this man continues to get reelected.
What we deperately need is a congress, at least a Democratic House of Representatives, to reign in Trump and his cabinet. Electing a moderate like Dan Schwartz will be a big step in that direction. Obviously sending Andy, a top Trump enabler, back to Washington is the worse thing we can do for our district and for the country.
Robin, I could not agree more. Thanks for writing.
Thank you, Maria. Your columns are always so sensible and informative..
But In order to have fair and balanced coverage, you should have mentioned the “pro” reasons for voting for Mr. Harris. Since Mr. Harris has welded himself to Donald Trump rather than represent the interests of his constituents, it’s only fair to identify some of the good reasons to vote for Harris as a proxy for voting for Trump. A small list of reasons should include: He supports the endless war with Iran, and like Trump thinks it is great you are paying more for gas and diesel. Trump’s son gets a very expensive wedding funded by a Russian oligarch. Graft is good. Hopefully Harris was invited.
Like Trump, Harris supports murderous dictators, such as in China and Russia. Those countries are providing assistance to Iran to kill Americans. But that’s okay. Trump feels bonded to them. Hopefully Harris will be invited to Russia like Trump’s son-in-law. Harris must be for the tariffs that are causing local farmers so many problems. Harris supports Trump’s efforts to poison the Chesapeake. In service to Trump, Harris will probably lobby for many data centers to be built on the Eastern Shore, especially on property owned by loyal Republicans. As a random example, a data center could be built next to the Royal Oaks resort – there is plenty of room. And we all need unregulated AI which may kill us, but not until 10 years from now. Speaking of killing, Harris supports the gutting of America’s military under Hegseth. Maybe Harris will reenlist and fill a vacancy for an admiral.
If Trump and Harris have their way, no one will be allowed to use vaccines to keep their children healthy. Why do children need vaccines when Harris and Trump want to cut children’s health care and food benefits? Vote for Harris because taking care of kids is a waste of money that could be better used by Elon Musk.
I think this provides enough counter reasons why someone should support Harris to the bitter end of America.
Michael, thanks for writing. I hope readers read your comment and take stock of the situation!
Andy Harris has consistently been rated as among the least effective members in Congress based on bills proposed, co-sponsored or passed. If this isn’t damning enough, It is often overlooked that Rep. Harris is also a physician, an anesthesiologist, who has stated that he returns to practice when Congress is out of session! As a retired physician, I find this as showing little care for the profession and even less for his patients for it is highly unlikely that he has been able to keep up with advances in his speciality and even less likely that his clinical “reflexes” have remained “tuned” enough to respond to emergencies. This practice coupled with support for the actions of RFKjr to neuter medical research and U.S. public health infrastructure says all one needs know about how much Rep Harris cares about his constituents. The only voter he seems to value is Mr. trump. It is past time to allow Andy to quietly fade away.
Bob, as always, you make excellent points. Readers, spread the word!
