As a candidate for Judge of the Orphans’ Court in Talbot County, I have spoken with people throughout our community and have been surprised to learn how many believe the Orphans’ Court handles adoptions.
Most of us learn about the court only after the loss of a loved one and when an estate must be settled. Families may be grieving while facing unfamiliar responsibilities, difficult decisions, and disagreements about what should happen next.
The Orphans’ Court is a probate court. Its judges hear certain matters involving estate administration, oversee aspects of the probate process, and decide issues that come before the court. It is not a criminal court and, despite its unusual name, does not handle adoptions.
For more than 30 years I worked in education and administration, much of it with families—listening to differing points of view and making thoughtful decisions in difficult circumstances. A judge must listen carefully, treat people with dignity and respect, and apply Maryland law fairly.
I am running because I care about helping families. Before November 3, I hope you will take a few minutes to learn about the Orphans’ Court and the people seeking to serve on it.
