Opinion: Team Talbot vs. Team Trump

A key issue in the upcoming Talbot County Council election is which candidates will exercise independent judgment.  Will any again drag the Council into one of President Trump’s culture wars?  For the last 250 years the Eastern Shore has remained fiercely independent and resentful of “foreign” efforts to control our lives from afar, whether from Britain, Annapolis, or Washington, DC.

Unfortunately, the Talbot County Republican Party purged its independent thinker, namely Lynn Mielke.  She received the most votes of any Republican council candidate in 2022 and was the Council’s only Republican woman and only lawyer.  Yet, the Talbot Republican Central Committee dumped her.

Her mortal sin was collaborating with Democrats.  Donald Trump has called Democrats the “enemy from within,” “vermin”, “scum”, “animals,” and “radical left lunatics,” and retaliated against Republicans in Congress who crossed the aisle to work with Democrats.    Likewise, Republican Central Committee Shari Wilcoxon, criticized Mielke for voting with Democrats on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), working with “Democrat Pete Lesher” on short-term rental legislation, and for even accepting donations from a Democrat.  Wilcoxon urged voters to support her five handpicked “true Republican candidates.”  I call them and their central committee “Team Trump”.

What does that mean? Council President Chuck Callahan and Council Member David Stepp, unlike Lynn Mielke, were willing to introduce a Trump culture war issue (DEI) and pursue it until the Council yielded.  Doing so required accepting two radical and likely unconstitutional Trumpian ideas: that the federal government can threaten federal funding to our County to dictate our local laws; and that the President can apply executive orders as if they are laws passed by Congress.

If the President again threatens Talbot’s federal funding to advance his agenda, we can expect Team Trump to yield again–not just on DEI, but potentially other issues.  In 2025 without any explanation, Trump designated Talbot as a “sanctuary jurisdiction,” meaning we have local policies that limit local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities.  He could similarly threaten County funding unless Talbot adopts immigration, election meddling, or other policies he favors.  The five Democratic members of Team Talbot will reject such pressure.

The DEI dispute began with the Council’s 2020 unanimous adoption of measures calling for County development of a diversity statement, inclusion in the county employee handbook, and reporting on employee training.  The objective was to foster employee understanding of people of different races, religions, ethnicities and thereby improve public services to the public.

After Trump issued his DEI executive order, Callahan reversed course.  He and Stepp twice pushed to repeal Talbot’s DEI regulation but lost initially.  Citing an April 24, 2025, letter from the Secretary of Transportation, Stepp argued that Talbot risked losing federal airport funding unless the County repealed its DEI policies.  In fact, the clear and explicit intent of the letter was to abolish DEI policies that were discriminatory, such as in hiring. The County Attorney advised the Council that Talbot’s DEI measures were not discriminatory, and the airport had no DEI policy.  Nevertheless, faced with a threat to federal airport funding, the Council buckled under pressure from Washington and Team Trump.

The same question of independent judgement arises with elections for our school board.  Its handbook urges members to exercise independent judgment and resist special interest pressure.  Yet, the Republican candidates for school board (and County Council) signed the Moms for Liberty pledge.

Shari Wilcoxan and others argue the pledge is innocent and non-political.  But Moms for Liberty’s website, posting a picture of Donald Trump, prominently invites parents, “Join President Trump and thousands more by signing our parent pledge.”  The issue is not whether the pledge itself is good or bad.  The problem is that candidates are pledging themselves to words written by an outside national organization, which has its own national board of directors, no obligation to disclose the group’s donors, and a mission to draft model legislation to govern school boards nationwide.  How can that not raise questions about candidates’ independent judgment?

Pete Lesher and the rest of Team Talbot offer a different approach.  As candidates with varied experience and backgrounds, they emphasize local rather than national ideological concerns.  They also better resemble the people of Talbot than Team Trump.  Talbot needs council members willing to defend local independence, work across party lines with mutual respect, and make decisions here, rather than taking their orders from distant quarters.

  1. I wholeheartedly agree that we, of Talbot County, should exercise our own judgement and seek the government the we wish to have here in our community free of undue outside influence. I have grown up on the show and spent the vast majority of my 61 years in this life here. I am open to outside ideas provided they are adapted by the whole of our local community rather than foisted upon us by much larger forces backed by enormous sums of money. It is imperative to push back against that which runs counter to the values derived from our morality and decency as opposed to seeking to be “dominant” as our GOP citizens seem to relish without understanding the detriment of unchecked and brutish power.

  2. I heartily concur with Jim Bruce. Two years ago, in an essay submitted for my 60 th college reunion publication, I observed that I Iived in a constructive community unspoiled by the harsh and shallow debates increasingly characteristic of political discourse at the national level.. The import of Trumpian characteristics into Talbot County should be strenuously resisted.

  3. There is nothing apolitical about Moms for Liberty. They are a right-wing group dedicated, in part, to abolishing public education. As Jim notes, check out their website. Or see what school board members sympathetic to Moms for Liberty have been doing in Somerset County. Lawsuits have been filed against them as they have been violated Maryland law.

  4. Actually I just went to the webpage Moms for Liberty; The Pledge: I pledge to honor the fundamental rights of parents including, but not limited to the right to direct the education, medical care, and moral upbringing of their children. I pledge to advance policies that strengthen parental involvement and decision-making, increase transparency, defend against government overreach, and secure parental rights at all levels of government. The group is referred to by Mr. Bruce as an outside national organization, of concerned parents? Oh, the parents have the support of the political party of which you are not a member so that makes them offensive? It seems to me that the citizens of Talbot county should be extremely concerned about their children’s education and the horrible test scores and want to find a solution. These scores didn’t just decrease and doing the same thing and expecting a different result is real stupidity. As far as the Talbot County Council abiding by laws or executive orders passed down from the federal government they used good professional judgement and sound legal procedures, just what most taxpayers would expect from their elected officials. Yes, Meilke could have persisted with her antics and the county would have suffered the consequences.

  5. Thanks for this informative and factual demonstration of how MAGA Republicans including Mom’s for Liberty have infiltrated our local politics with their destructive Right Wing agenda. Team Trump politicians should all be replaced in future elections by Team Talbot candidates. VOTE THEM OUT! Save our democracy and preserve our right to local government control. Please publish the names of all the Team Talbot candidates in the upcoming election.

    1. Roger might be exactly an example why Government on both sides are failing the American people. It appears you might be bias to only things that are on the Democratic agenda. Yes there are people as well who are bias with the Republican agenda. Whatever happened to people who voted based upon their own personal values and beliefs. Today regardless of beliefs we seem to vote straight Democrat or Straight Republican without doing the research on each candidate. We may very well have become lazy voters who jump on the bandwagon of our political parties. We will never grow stronger until we the American people learn something called Compromise. Because someone we voted for didn’t get elected we have a temper tantrum and say negative things about the other candidate. I’ve taught young people for years to think for themselves when it comes to politics and look at each candidate and make their decision based upon whether they have more of the ideology that’s similar to their own. Don’t look at political parties. George Washington once said about partisanship that it would lead to “Spirit of Revenge” and that it would eventually not lead to the governing of the good of the people but for their own power! Prime example is how our politicians go into office and come out millionaires!

  6. Laura Everngam brought to my attention an error in my piece above. I am grateful to her for this because I think her comments suggest that the Talbot Republican Central Committee has had a problem with high vote-getting women who are willing to think independently and negotiate with Democrats on the Council.to reach compromises. Lynn Mielke was apparently not the first victim. Laura (then Laura Price) was a council member, elected in 2018 with more votes than any other candidate, Republican or Democrat, and a recognized expert on the Talbot County budget process.
Laura commented elsewhere where my article was published:

“I want to correct one statement in Mr Bruce’s article. The 2020 DEI and employee policies were not a unanimous vote. I was the sole councilmember to vote against them. In 2018, like Lynn Mielke, I was the subject of the Republican central committees nonsupport in the primary and general elections. Why, because I also worked with all members of the council to determine on the best local policies for Talbot. County, which in large part are non political in nature or should be. That is the problem I see. National beliefs working their way down to the local level where they mostly do not belong.”

  7. Thank you Mr. Bruce for your thoughtful letter.
Last month in Dallas, President Trump stated “I am on the ballot” in 2026.
Please keep that in mind as you go to the polls in November.
