Paige Davis-Perez turns loose wool into whimsical three-dimensional art—and shows Chesapeake Forum participants how to do it, one careful poke at a time.
Join Chesapeake Forum for Felting Magic: Garden Witches & Whimsical Woolies, a hands-on fall workshop series with Paige Davis-Perez of Farm Girl Felts. The first project, Garden Witch, meets Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 1–3 p.m. at the Easton Family YMCA. https://chesapeakeforum.org/course/felting-magic-garden-witches-whimsical-woolies/
Start with a handful of loose wool, add a specialized barbed needle and a little imagination, and a three-dimensional character gradually begins to emerge. Needle felting is a bit like sculpting with wool: repeated pokes catch, tangle and compress the fibers, transforming soft wool roving into a solid shape.
Davis-Perez guides participants step by step through the process, from building the basic form to layering colors and adding the small details, textures and expressions that give each piece its personality. All materials are provided, and participants leave with a finished Garden Witch to display at home or give as a handmade gift.
For Davis-Perez, wool is more than an art supply. A lifelong farm girl, she raises her own sheep and uses her creative talents to design felted animals and teach workshops through Farm Girl Felts. Participants in her previous Chesapeake Forum classes have praised the small-group setting, clear instruction and her helpful, knowledgeable teaching style.
The Sept. 29 Garden Witch workshop is the first of three fall projects. Separate sessions feature a Curly Sheep on Oct. 27 and a Downy Woodpecker on Nov. 17. Participants may choose one session or all three; each session is $50 and includes the materials and instruction needed for that project.
Felting Magic: Garden Witches & Whimsical Woolies begins with the Garden Witch session Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 1–3 p.m. in the classroom at the Easton Family YMCA. The cost is $50 per session, including all materials and instruction. To see current availability and register, visit chesapeakeforum.org.
