During American Diabetes Month® this November, the American Diabetes Association is rallying local Eastern Shore residents to take action and Join the Millions® in the fight to Stop Diabetes®.
Diabetes doesn’t stop. It is 24/7, 365 days a year.
“The night is the scariest part of our lives now. We awaken without alarms in the middle of the night, quietly sneak into Allie’s room and check her blood sugar. We don’t mind, we don’t question, we don’t complain because it’s what we do to stay sane, to try to feel we have some control over the beast that invaded our lives, we do it so it doesn’t win”, shares Jennifer Holdgreve of Centerville and mother to Allison who was diagnosed just over two years ago and is an American Diabetes Association Youth Ambassador.
To showcase the extraordinary effort it takes to live a day with the disease, the American Diabetes Association will continue to ask people affected by diabetes to submit a personal image to the Association’s Facebook mosaic representing what A Day in the Life of Diabetes means to them.
Nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes, including a disproportionate amount of people on the Eastern Shore. An additional 79 million Americans are at high risk for type 2 diabetes. Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take the steps to Stop Diabetes.
“We’re excited to further grow this online campaign and heighten the overall awareness of diabetes on the Eastern Shore,” stated Katherine Rogers, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association, Maryland Chapter. “By calling on our community to take a public stand through social media, we continue to shine a light on the issue of diabetes and those who live with it each and every day.”

About American Diabetes Month
November is American Diabetes Month, a time to communicate the seriousness of diabetes and the importance of diabetes prevention and control. For years, the American Diabetes Association has used this month as an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and its serious complications.
About the Stop Diabetes® Movement
Stop Diabetes is the American Diabetes Association’s movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on the lives of millions of individuals across our nation. Its goal is to inspire and mobilize the general public, volunteers, donors, corporations and the scientific and medical communities to rally around our cause and our call to “share, act, learn and give.” Through these actions, millions will have the chance to get involved and help raise awareness, promote healthy living and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts and critical research that will ultimately stop diabetes once and for all.
