The theme of this year’s World Kindness Week is “Be kind whenever possible .”
What does it really mean to be kind? If you’re nice and polite are you kind? According to the Random Act of Kindness blog, kindness is much more than being nice. Nice can be thought of as doing just ‘the minimum’ because we were taught to be polite. Nice is a self-centered behavior to get people to like you. Kindness is an “other centered” pattern where one acts in the best interest of others out of a sense of love, compassion, and empathy. Kindness is a movement, it’s that ‘pay it forward’ attitude. Kindness is a chain reaction. Kindness is grace.
Kind people are those that are gentle and patient with those who need help. Kind people are good listeners. Kind people don’t judge others, they get to know them. Kind people give without expecting anything in return and respect the needs of others. Kind people are honest. Kind people are grateful.
What would happen if we all committed to performing one act of kindness a day? Some believe that kindness has the potential to change the world.
World Kindness Week was established in 1997 by a group of associations in England, Thailand, Australia, and the United States. The sole purpose of this week is to focus on the positivity that surrounds us everyday. At the moment, World Kindness Week is an unofficial celebration; however, enthusiasts hope that it will soon achieve recognition by the United Nations.
Groove City Black Heritage and Culture Group are hosting a Christmas for Seniors Drive. This is a prime example of kindness, as seniors are often overlooked at Christmas time. The Christmas Drive is asking for donations of crossword puzzle books, lotion, warm hats, gloves, socks, blankets, and pajamas to be included in gift baskets. The Blue Awning, The Chamber of Commerce, and The Visitor’s Center are the drop-off points.
Kindness is now part of the curriculum at many schools in the United States.
I am so proud of my 10 year old granddaughter, Hazel, she received 2 St. Francis of Assisi awards for service to others at her school. St. Francis of Assisi is known for his ministry to the poor and underprivileged and his care for nature and animals, a beautiful legacy. I intend to be more like St. Francis and my granddaughter, Hazel, everyday.
