Bring your favorite landscape or seascape photos and turn them into a successful abstracted painting in this one-day painting workshop sponsored by the St. Michaels Art League.
The class will focus on methods and techniques to create a simplified thumbnail sketch with a strong composition for your painting. Various examples of successful contemporary paintings will also be shared and discussed for your inspiration.
Students will then create one small color study and move into a larger format to create a final painting balancing line, form, color and texture, learning to “loosen up” and move away from the complexity and detail of a photograph.
Smaller sheets of watercolor paper will be provided for your preliminary color sketch. Please bring a sketchbook or several sheets of paper and pencil for your initial sketch as well as your painting supplies. Students may work in oil or acrylic or watercolor. Bring supplies you are comfortable with and several photos to choose from. There are a limited number of easels available; if this is your preferred method and you have your own easel, please bring it. Bring your lunch as well for a break at noon. Work will be shared for a group critique at the end of the workshop.
