Tidewater Camera Club: Flight
October 15 – November 27, 2016
Now in its 53rd year, the Tidewater Camera Club has long been a mainstay of the art community on the Eastern Shore. The Tidewater Camera Club exhibition is a biennial event at the Academy Art Museum. In consultation with the Museum’s Curator, Tidewater Camera Club members have been challenged to submit their best interpretations on the theme of “Flight” to the exhibition’s juror, Celia Pearson, a lifelong artist with many years of practice as an independent, published assignment photographer.
The Myth Makers in Maryland: The Mighty Merganser

Artists Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein (aka the Myth Makers) will build one of their iconic sapling sculptures on the Museum’s grounds beginning October 29. The 16-foot high bird sculpture, made from natural materials with the help of volunteers, will be based on the Hooded Merganser, a bird which is common in Maryland and representative of the independent thinking and bravery of Eastern Shore native Frederick Douglass. Although monumental in scale, the ephemeral works of the Myth Makers are temporary in nature, meaning to last three to five years. Based in Boston, the Myth Makers have worked in Peru, Switzerland, Canada and China and have shown their monumental sculptures the “Avian Avatars,” on Broadway in New York, NY; Muskegon, MI; New Orleans, and in many museums in New England. The exhibition is sponsored by the Maryland State Arts Council, Talbot County Arts Council, the Star-Democrat, Katherine and David Allen, Maurits Van Wagenberg, and Atlantic Security.

The Museum is pleased to present its Annual Members’ Exhibition. This exceptional tradition represents the best of the region’s artists and offers an opportunity to view the creative talents of colleagues and friends. Each member has the opportunity to show one piece.
LECTURES
The Kittredge-Wilson Lecture Series features an exciting array of speakers who impart a diversity of perspectives on subjects such as art, architecture, history and literature. The 2016-2017 schedule includes six lectures from October 2016 through April 2017. Patrons can pay $300 per person (includes two tickets for each lecture. The 10 Series Ticket for 6 Lectures is $100 for Museum members and $120 for Non-Museum members. Individual tickets costs is $20 for Museum members and $24 for Non- Museum members. Pre-registration is suggested.

Painting With Wool: A 2D Needle Felting Workshop

Learn how to “paint” with wool instead of canvas or paper. Students will create pictures with dyed wool batt on a 9” x 12” piece of commercial felt using basic needle felting techniques. Essence and Design: A Plein Air and Studio Workshop Ken Dewaard

During this four-day workshop, the students will be spending the first two days out on location (weather permitting) followed by the final two days back at the Academy Art Museum Studio. Day 1 and 2 the class will be producing some smaller plein air paintings focusing on color notes and gathering information to utilize back in the studio.

These workshops will include an introductory overview of digital fabrication processes such as 3D printing, laser cutting/engraving, digital embroidery, 3D scanning, digital textile printing, CNC routing and how artists are using these tools. Watercolor Painting with a Triad Palette

This is a one-day workshop exploring the use of various triad color combinations to create more cohesive paintings. The mixing of triad pigments, the use of drawing gum, design, and wet on wet painting will be explored. Barbara will demonstrate three different triads at different stages with a floral as subject matter. Participants will be able to choose a triad and work on a painting using a subject of their choice. Critique will be part of the workshop. Some watercolor experience is helpful. Bring a lunch and a drink. A supply list will be available.
Night at the Museum Part 1: Painting the Night Cityscape in Oil or Pastels

What could be more delightful than painting Easton on a beautiful fall evening. Learn how to infuse your oil, acrylic or pastel painting with dramatic light and color even when the hour is getting late. While doing a demo in their medium, each instructor will guide you through the process of creating contrasts in warm and cool colors while designing strong compositions. The students will learn to set up their own drawing and find the lightest and darkest values in the scene, then how to take colors down in intensity as darkness falls. Students can continue with their painting Friday night or start a new painting during Night at the Museum Part 2.

October begins oyster season on The Eastern Shore — where we proudly host the last remaining commercial sailing fleet in the United States. Using multitudes of photos of skipjacks in action and just as many photos of skies, create one or more original paintings or drawings of skipjacks and crews in action. Students may also bring their own skipjack photos or models to use as source material for their art. This class is suitable for a child working alone, or for a child/adult combo (parent, grandparent, or mentor). All professional painting supplies are provided including a mat for finished work.
