You are invited to participate in a global celebration of the United Nations International Day of Peace on Thursday, September 21 from 5-6 pm in the fountain area of Idlewild Park at the Corner of Idlewild and Washington Streets in Easton. The theme of the one hour silent vigil is “Making Peace.” If you are unable to join us at the vigil, consider honoring the day by making peace with someone in your life. If you are able, please join us, rain or shine!
The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by the UN by resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982. It has grown to include millions of people all over the world. In addition to standing for the end of violence and conflict in every nation, it is an opportunity to make peace in our own personal relationships.
This Peace Vigil is sponsored by P.E.A.C.E. (Peace Education And Community Effort), a Talbot County grassroots organization whose vision is to promote a culture of peace in our community and in the world. We began standing for peace a few weeks before the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Since then, we have been standing for Peace every Thursday between 5 and 6pm in front of the courthouse on Washington Street in Easton. Please join us! See www.talbotcountypeace.org for more details.
