Cambridge Council Work Session Highlights: A Possible Change in Form of Government

February 1, 2022 by The Cambridge Spy

The City of Cambridge Council held a special work session on Monday night to discuss the option of a new form of city government resulting in a “Council-Manager” model. This proposal would eliminate the position of mayor, and its role and responsibilities would be transferred to the City Council president.

Nothing was decided last night, but it was an interesting discussion about the function of city government, the costs and possible savings that this new form might bring to Cambridge, and the potential downsides of eliminating such an important figurehead role for the municipality.

Due to technical difficulties with the Town Hall Streams connection, the Spy can only share a small segment of the evening’s conversations. Still, it successfully conveys the seriousness of the commissioners considering this important change.

This video is approximately 17 minutes in length.
