Know Us Before Us: A Talbot Hospice Story – Nancy Nolan

December 18, 2020 by Talbot Hospice

“Thanks to the amazing team at Talbot Hospice, my dad and I were able to be husband and daughter and not just caregivers to my mom.”

That’s the way Kelly Griffith described the care her mother, Nancy Nolan, received at The Eleanor K. Koons Hospice House during her final months of life. Kelly, who is Superintendent of Talbot County Public Schools, told how her mom came to Talbot Hospice and how she flourished there.

“We thought she had only a week to live when she came to Hospice on April 27, 2016, but she got better.” Her mother, Nancy, survived another four months until August 20th

When Nancy improved, Kelly and her dad, Jim Nolan, wondered if they had made a premature, wrong decision. Local physician Dr. Rob Sanchez told them her mom’s case was not unique. “We see a lot of patients get better when they come to Hospice.”

Nancy’s journey to Hospice was preceded by three bouts of breast cancer over nearly 20 years. Repeated radiation and chemotherapy had taken its toll. In December, 2015, she had experienced headaches and balance problems. By February, 2016, the cancer had spread to her brain and lungs. Nancy was too tired for more treatments. “The Lord is ready for me,” she said.

Kelly was driving 50 miles most nights to Dover, Delaware—where Nancy and Jim lived—to cook dinner, help care for her mom at night, then drive back the next morning to her demanding superintendent’s job in Easton.

Then, her dad, Jim fractured his back while helping Nancy get back to bed. Kelly knew it was time to do something different. After a fellow Rotary Club member shared that a room was available at Hospice House, Kelly made the call.

“My dad was impressed with the cleanliness, a private room and all the services,” Kelly said. The next day, Nancy moved in. “I knew it was the right decision.”

That began a four-month stay at The Eleanor A. Koons Hospice House. Jim moved in with Kelly and her husband, Barry, who at that time lived in Wye Mills, a lot closer than Dover. He would visit his wife every day at Hospice; then Kelly would come over for lunch and dinner and spend the evening. Jim and Nancy watched old movies together and he read from the Bible. An early riser, Jim sometime would come as early as 5:30 am. “Hospice House is always accessible,” Kelly noted. She recalled that her youngest son, Wyatt, often would work out at the YMCA but instead of doing an aerobic routine on the treadmill “he’d run over, all sweaty, to Hospice to visit his grandmother,” Kelly said. Her other two sons, Jake and Brady, also visited often.

“Mom enjoyed the activities here and most days would visit every room to see if they had gotten flowers,” Kelly recalled.

But most of all, Kelly said, the staff was wonderful. “They take care of their patients 24-7 so we can spend time quality time with our loved one.”

“The trained nurses, skilled aides and volunteers did everything—taking mom to the bathroom, dressing her, giving the family updates on her illness, counseling us and all the while showing great patience and love,”Kelly said.

“If mom wanted some pudding,” Kelly recalled, “the staff would go get it.”

Kelly said every one of the staff and volunteers was outstanding. Mary Jane Meintzer, registered nurse and quality improvement coordinator was great, she said. Rev. Gil Anderson, a volunteer, counseled her dad and helped him deal with the difficult situation, Kelly recalled.

During Nancy’s Hospice stay, she and Jim celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Two volunteers, Steve and Anne Slack, offered to cook the meal of her choice for the occasion. They also told Nancy she could invite four couples from Dover to join them, which they did. Nancy’s choice was clams linguini. “Red or white sauce?”  she was asked. “Red,” Nancy replied firmly. The night of the big dinner, Nancy had forgotten, and asked for white sauce. The Slacks provided both, and everyone had a little of both so they wouldn’t run out.

Kelly and her family, most of all her mom Nancy, felt very comfortable at Talbot Hospice. The staff arranged for musicians to come in and play in the hall for the patients. The rooms and halls were decorated with colorful artwork, some of it donated by art teachers and their students from the local public schools. “Mom really enjoyed the artwork, which brightened up the space.”

“This is a classy place,” Kelly said. “Even the meals are served on china every night. They help our loved ones to die with dignity.”

Note: Talbot Hospice cared for Nancy prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Talbot Hospice Launches “Know Us Before You Need Us” Campaign

December 1, 2020 by Talbot Hospice

Dr. Kelly O’Donnell

Talbot Hospice is proud to partner with Dr. Kelly O’Donnell, of O’Donnell Vein and Laser, to present its first-ever “Know Us Before You Need Us” Campaign.

The “Know Us Before You Need Us” Campaign will feature the stories of patients, families and staff from one or more ofTalbot Hospice’s four core programs: Hospice, Palliative Care, Pathways and Bereavement Support. One story will be shared each month on social, digital and print media across the Mid-Shore through December 2021.

“One of the biggest challenges we have is educating our community that our services are not just provided at Hospice House during the very last days of a patient’s life,” said Mia Cranford, Talbot Hospice Director of Development. “Research consistently shows that engaging hospice and palliative care early in a life-limiting diagnosis offers tremendous benefits to both patients and their families. We hope these stories inspire our community to invite us to walk with them and support them earlier on their journey.”

As the “Know Us Before You Need Us” Presenting Sponsor, Dr. Kelly O’Donnell underwrote the costs of the campaign to educate the Mid-Shore about the many ways Talbot Hospice’s compassionate services and programs are available long before the very end of life.

“The Eastern Shore Community is close to my heart,” said Dr. O’Donnell. “I’ve served patients in Easton for more than eight years. They are farmers, watermen, lawyers, front-line workers, executives and retirees – and just like vein disease, life-limiting illnesses touch everyone.

Becoming a partner with Talbot Hospice and in particular, being part of the ‘Know Us Before You Need Us Campaign’, is very meaningful to me. I’ve had the experience of losing loved ones that were very ill and were comforted by hospice care. It’s a difficult road and one that doesn’t have to be traveled alone.”

Dr. O’Donnell earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, completing her internship in general surgery at the University Hospitals of Cleveland and her residency in anesthesiology and critical care at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She spent a decade practicing cardiovascular and critical care anesthesia in the Washington, DC area, before turning her focus to vein care.

With a brand-new office located at 499 Idlewild Avenue in Easton, O’Donnell Vein & Laser is the region’s premier center for the comprehensive treatment of varicose veins, spider veins and venous disorders. Talbot Hospice Commemorates National Hospice & Palliative Care Month

November 15, 2020 by Talbot Hospice

Throughout the month of November, Talbot Hospice is joining with its partners and colleagues across the country to raise awareness about the benefits of hospice and palliative care. The 2020 national theme, “The Faces of Caring,” honors the hard work and dedication of every hospice professional who has faced the challenges of COVID-19 to provide comfort and compassion to patients and their families.

“Hospice is not a place. Hospice is high-quality patient-centered care that enables patients and families to focus on living as fully as possible despite a life-limiting illness,” said Chris Chekouras, Talbot Hospice Executive Director. “We are proud to join with our colleagues to raise awareness locally and beyond of the benefits of hospice and palliative care.”

Senator Addie Eckardt presents Talbot Hospice with a Maryland Senate Citation in recognition of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. From left: Mia Cranford, Mary Jane Meintzer, Senator Addie Eckardt, Molly Kirsch and Lisa Rizia.

To commemorate National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, Talbot Hospice received citations from Governor Larry Hogan and the Maryland State Senate as well as a proclamation from the Talbot County Council.

On November 10th, Chekourasand Molly Kirsch, Clinical Director, provided an update to the Talbot County Council on the status of hospice and palliative care in Talbot County and how the organization continues to adapt to and provide care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We can still be hands-on, but our hands are now covered with a glove, and our faces are behind a mask. The compassion that we show and the depth of care we provide is still there, but it might look and feel a little different,” continued Chekouras. “For us, and everyone in healthcare, we’re all still finding our way. Our team continues to evolve to ensure that our patients and their families receive the compassionate and personalized care they deserve and need in a time of continued uncertainty.”

Three Million Steps of Love for Talbot Hospice!

October 3, 2020 by Talbot Hospice

305 Talbot Hospice supporters walked 3,076,177 steps over the weekend of September 25th – 27th as part of the organization’s Virtual Memorial Walk.

“To say we are overwhelmed would be an understatement,” said Emilie Joshi, Memorial Walk Co-Chair. “As we were planning for a virtual event, we thought it would be meaningful to challenge our community to walk or run one million steps of love for Talbot Hospice. We never anticipated that our community would triple our original step goal!”

Participants in the Talbot Hospice Memorial Walk were encouraged to complete a Race Bib sharing the name(s) of their loved ones they honored with their walk.

Talbot Hospice decided to transition to a virtual event this Spring when the arrival of COVID-19 made it impossible to host the event as part of Oxford Day. Traditional elements of the event, such as the Dove Release, sponsored by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, and the invocation were filmed in advance and shared with the community on social media.

There were also new additions to the virtual event, including the one million step challenge, a race bib to allow participants to write the name of the individual(s) they were honoring, and a new social media component where walkers and runners shared photos from their walk or run.

Participants walked in small groups, with family and friends, or on their own. Many shared their reflections and photos on social media and in the online step tracking group.

“The Memorial Walk has always been a special time for individuals and the community to come together to remember and honor their loved ones,” continued Joshi. “We were proud that we were able to continue to provide that experience as well as welcome out-of-town family and friends to join us for the first time. Even though we were apart, we were still connected throughout the weekend.”

Steps were logged from across the Mid-Shore and from as far away as Daytona, Florida, Denver, Colorado and San Francisco, California. A large count was also contributed by the entire Bucknell University Tennis Team.

While raising awareness locally and across the Country, the Virtual Memorial Walk also raised $26,000 for Talbot Hospice’s four key programs that support patients and families facing life-limiting illness. Those programs are Hospice and Palliative Care, Pathways and Bereavement Services.

“When we learned we had to ‘go virtual’, we never could have imagined this level of success,” said Mia Cranford, Talbot Hospice Director of Development. “We are so thankful for all of our walkers and runners, as well as our sponsors, especially our Presenting Sponsor, Craig’s Drugstore, who stuck with us through the transition to a virtual event.”

The Family of Regina Hutchison participated in the Talbot Hospice Virtual Memorial Walk over the weekend of September 25th – September 27th.

The 2020 Talbot Hospice Virtual Memorial Walk was sponsored by Craig’s Drugstore, Shore United Bank, Avon Dixon Insurance Agency, Fellowes, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral, Home Economy Tree Service, The Easton Group at Morgan Stanley, S&K Roofing, Siding & Windows, Hertrich Easton, Tidewater Cleaning Service and Booth, Cropper & Marriner, P.C. and Bay Imprint. Packet pick-up was hosted by the Easton Elks Lodge #1622 on Dutchman’s Lane.

As the team begins plans for the 2021 Memorial Walk, they plan to raise the step goal, and also keep a virtual option available for the event, if it is able to return to its traditional format.

“We’re issuing a new challenge for 2021 – FOUR million steps for Talbot Hospice!” said Cranford.

Talbot Hospice Welcomes New Executive Director

August 21, 2020 by Talbot Hospice

Talbot Hospice is proud to welcome Christopher Chekouras as its new Executive Director. Chekouras joined the organization on August 17 th and most recently served as the Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Agnes Healthcare, a member of Ascension Health, in
Baltimore.

Talbot Hospice is proud to welcome Christopher Chekouras as its new Executive Director. Chekouras joined the organization on August 17th and most recently served as the Interim President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Agnes Healthcare, a member of Ascension Health, in Baltimore.

“We are delighted to welcome Chris to Talbot Hospice as our Executive Director.  His career as a healthcare executive, coupled with his passion for serving the community make him uniquely qualified to lead the organization forward, while continuing to provide exemplary service to our patients and families,” said Sheila Monahan, Talbot Hospice Board President.

Assuming the top leadership role at Talbot Hospice represents a new personal and professional chapter for Chekouras as he “retires” from a three-decade-long career in hospital management and administration and transitions into hospice and palliative care.

“The opportunity to join the Talbot Hospice team, is in many ways the perfect opportunity, at the perfect time in my life,” said Chekouras. “It is an opportunity to combine my passion for serving the community and leading an organization dedicated to caring for some of the most vulnerable members of our community in the final stages of their life. It is a great honor being asked to serve as the next Executive Director, and I look forward to sharing my experience and continuing my learning.”

Chekouras is a former board member of Samaritan Healthcare and Hospice in New Jersey and has personally experienced the comfort hospice care brings to patients and their families at the end of life. He has a passion and tremendous amount of respect for those serving in hospice care, and also understands the challenges of their work.

When asked about Talbot Hospice’s greatest assets, Chekouras points to the support the organization receives from the community, its talented and compassionate staff and the dedication of its board members. He is committed to building on the organization’s success by strengthening relationships and partnerships throughout the community with other healthcare and related organizations, which is especially important in the new normal created by COVID-19.

“A challenge all healthcare providers face is learning how to thrive in a time of great uncertainty and change. COVID has impacted us all and will continue to influence how we all work and live,” shared Chekouras.

“Thanks to the efforts of our transitional leadership team of Molly Kirsch, Amy Stitcher and Mary Jane Meintzer, our commitment and care of our patients and their families has never wavered during this pandemic. As an organization, we are well-positioned to start our next chapter amidst these uncharted waters with Chris at the helm,” said Sheila Monahan, Board President.

In addition to beginning his new role at Talbot Hospice, Chekouras is also looking forward to being a full-time resident of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“Twenty-seven years ago, I married the love of my life, Jennifer. A year later, while celebrating our first wedding anniversary, we visited and fell in love with Maryland’s Eastern Shore,” said Chekouras. “Together, we’ve raised two wonderful daughters and have lived in Maryland, New Jersey and Maine to support the advancement of my career. All through the years, we always knew we would one day return to Maryland with the hope that we could fulfill our dream of living on the Eastern Shore. Several years ago, we acted on that dream by purchasing our very last “forever home” on the banks of the Chester River in Chestertown. Having lived apart for much of the past three years, I most look forward to returning home each evening after work and having dinner with my family.”

Talbot Hospice is planning several virtual “meet and greet” events with Chekouras for the organization’s stakeholders and the larger community over the coming months. Please visit www.talbothospice.org for dates and more information.

Talbot Hospice Memorial Walk “Goes Virtual”

July 21, 2020 by Talbot Hospice

Talbot Hospice is happy to announce that its annual Memorial Walk has “gone virtual” and has been rescheduled for the weekend of Friday, September 25 – Sunday, September 27.  The event was originally scheduled for April 25th to coincide with Oxford Day, but was cancelled due to COVID-19.

“We were disappointed that we had to cancel our traditional event this spring, but we are excited about the new possibilities a virtual event provides,” said Emilie Joshi, Memorial Walk Co-Chairwoman and a Talbot Hospice Board Member. “With a virtual event, participants can walk or run wherever and whenever they choose over the weekend, and can also invite friends, family and coworkers to join them.”

As part of the new virtual event, Talbot Hospice is encouraging the Mid-Shore to walk one million steps in memory of a loved one. The steps will be tallied throughout the weekend and final results will be shared on Sunday evening.

“One mile is approximately 2,000 steps, and we are asking our friends on the Mid-Shore to dedicate their weekend steps to Talbot Hospice to help us reach our goal and to raise funds and awareness of the important role Talbot Hospice plays in our community,” said Joshi.

Participants are also encouraged to share photos of their walk and the names of those who they are honoring on social media.

“In addition to our excitement about the new format for our Memorial Walk, we are also thrilled to welcome Craig’s Drugstore as our presenting sponsor,” said Mia Cranford, Talbot Hospice Development Director. “Their generous support has underwritten the event and ensures that all registration fees will go directly to support our patients and their families. We are also proud to have What’s Up Media as our official media sponsor.”

Registration fees are $25/adults, $10/students, and no fee for children under 12. Participants will receive a t-shirt, running bib they can personalize with the person(s) they are honoring and other gifts. All proceeds benefit Talbot Hospice patients and their families, who are never turned away due to an inability to pay.
