Founded in 1997 by artists Dorothy Newland, Jennifer Heyd Wharton, and Laura Era, Troika Gallery opened its doors in Easton and has since become a staple in the local art scene. Selected Works, a Troika Gallery curated exhibit featuring oil landscape paintings by artist Kevin Fitzgerald opens on First Friday, October 3, 2025. On a recent visit to the Fitzgerald studio the paintings were personally hand chosen by the Troika Gallery owner and manager in collaboration with the artist.

Fitzgerald’s paintings are highly sought after and known for their timeless and ethereal quality. Kevin has a great reverence for the land and sea and fully expresses it in his tonalist paintings characterized by neutral hues, muted atmospheric tones, and mystery. “Be brief, use the least to say the most. To gain the particular is to lose the infinite.Painting is a solitary communication and strives to go beyond words,” Fitzgerald comments.

Inspired by French mid 19th-century romantic landscape painters, Fitzgerald’s paintings are evocative and spiritual. His fields of color are both suggestions and subtle depictions.

Kevin studied with Raoul Middleman at the Maryland Institute College of Art and pursued his M.F.A., under a full fellowship at George Washington University. An educator and painter, his work is collected by a former president, known celebrities and private collectors both here and abroad. Art by all of the Troika Artists is on display with new work constantly refreshing the gallery’s exhibition spaces. Back by popular demand, “Fabulous Forgeries” opens July 11, 2025 at Troika Gallery. Judged by Dr. Dan Weiss, former President, and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC,  the exhibit features select Troika Artists painting “copies” of their favorite Old Master paintings for show and sale. Claude Monet, Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Joaquin Sorolla, Vincent Van Gogh, Winslow Homer and others will be featured in the “Fabulous Forgery” exhibit. 

This entertaining and educational exhibit runs parallel to the Plein Air Easton Festival. It offers the opportunity to take in a unique show while appreciating the historical context and creativity of  master painters. Photos of the original painting hang next to each  “forgery” as a reference.

Troika Gallery artist and art historian, John Eiseman, will lead a participatory discussion titled ‘The Nexus Between Old Masters and Contemporary Art of Today’ during the Friday reception. In conjunction with the master “Fabulous Forgery” exhibit, John will highlight the works of European artists of the past.  

Art lovers who visit Troika will have the opportunity to cast a vote for their favorite ‘Forgery”.  Dr. Weiss will award categories of  Judges Choice, Most Believable, Most Creative and The Peoples Choice will result in a monetary prize for the artist.

Concurrent with the Fabulous Forgery show, an exhibit of vibrant still life and landscape paintings, Louis Escobedo, “It’s All About Color” runs through July 31, 2025. An Award winning Master Signature artist from The National Oil Painters of America, Louis intermingles abstract shapes and color to energize his paintings.

Louis Escobedo, “It’s All About Color,” opens June 6, First Friday at Troika Gallery in Easton.
An award-winning Master Signature artist from The National Oil Painters of America, Louis intermingles abstract shapes and color to energize his subjects, which include landscapes, still lifes, and figures. “Color is a person’s signature, a personal form of expression and another sense an artist can use to communicate “says Louis.

Louis Escobedo was born in 1952 and currently paints from his studio in Easton, MD. He received a BFA in Advertising Art from Sam Houston State University yet began his painting career at age 6 when he won the best of show in his elementary school in Sweetwater, Texas. As a freelance illustrator he honed his talents and in 1981 received a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators.

In 1985, he shifted his professional focus, moving from illustration to fine art. During his fine art career, Louis exhibited in many galleries across the United States. In 1994, Louis was awarded his first Gold Medal from the National Oil Painters of America (OPA) and received his second in 2014 with a $25,000 award. He is one, of only two artists receiving this prestigious award, twice, from this organization. In 2019 Escobedo received the Master Signature Status from OPA based on his mastery of oil painting. Recently, Louis was awarded a Silver medal in the Masters Signature Division for OPA.

Louis commented, “By seeking relationships of values, causing shapes of irregularity that create a strong design, I am always asked about my color, but they don’t know that it’s the grey’s that makes the color sing. As an artist we are searching for what would make a better painting. I would say it’s the Ying and Yang of things or the opposites. The texture against a solid mass. Is the painting a loud or a quiet place to be? There are more questions than answers. I feel it’s more about the simplicity, the caring for the love of art.”

Louis and his wife Yolanda owned and operated The 717 Gallery in Easton years ago. As a couple they are familiar with many facets of the art world. Louis is thrilled now to being represented by Troika Gallery.

Troika Gallery presents nationally acclaimed still life, realist artist, Matt Zoll on First Friday, November 1, 2024.

Painting professionally for over thirty seven years, Zoll studied at The Schuler School of Fine Arts where he mastered the painting techniques of the Flemish Masters. Incorporating hand-grounded oil pigments and a rare hand-made painting medium which produces a rich luster and an intense luminosity, Zoll’s paintings achieve remarkable color and vibrancy.

Matt has had many sold-out, one-man shows and currently exhibits his work exclusively at Troika Gallery in Easton. He is the director of the Zoll Studio School of Fine Art in Timonium, MD.
