Carpe Diem Arts will present its next “Music in the Gallery” concert on Sunday, April 22 at 5:00pm, a one-hour performance followed by a wine and cheese reception at the Contemporary Tapestry Gallery, 5592 Poplar Lane, Royal Oak, MD near the Bellevue landing of the Oxford ferry.
Featured will be the internationally acclaimed Dom Flemons, GRAMMY® winning musician, singer-songwriter, and guardian of American song traditions.
As a founding member of the renowned Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band, Dom was able to explore his interest in bringing traditional music to new audiences. Carrying on the songster tradition, Flemons strives to mix traditional music forms with a contemporary approach, to create new sounds that will appeal to wider audiences. In his recent solo albums, Flemons draws from a wide range of styles, including ragtime, Piedmont blues, spirituals, cowboy songs, southern traditional music, string band music, fife and drum music, and jug-band music. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Dom plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, fife, bones, bass drum, snare drum, and quills. His latest recording is issued on Smithsonian Folkways and reflects Dom’s extensive research on the remarkable song tradition of Black Cowboys. Little known but true fact is that 1 out of 4 cowboys was African American. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Dom Flemons in the intimate setting of Ulrika Leander’s glorious tapestry gallery.
