Easton Artist Earns National Recognition with Etching in Prestigious Washington, D.C. Exhibition

An etching by Sheryl Southwick of Easton won a spot in a prestigious show in Washington, D.C.

Southwick’s print Barges on the Mississippi at Baton Rouge is one of 35 works chosen from 300 included in the 27th Annual Peggy Doole National Small Works Competition & Exhibition which opens August 1 with a Saturday August 2 reception from 2-5. It runs through August 31 at 1675 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, D.C.

This etching depicts one of the artist’s favorite scenes in her native city.  It is a copperplate etching made with hardground, aquatint, scraping and burnishing, colored a la poupee. She is a member of the Aqua Regia Press housed on the campus of Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold.  Whenever she crosses the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to work at the press she is reminded of her love for the scene.

“There is something peaceful and steady when I look at barges on water. They look still.  You know they are going somewhere.  Slowly.  Perhaps they remind me of patience and steadfastness which are what drives artists to reach the point where their idea is embodied at last.”

The artist is a long time resident of Easton.  She is known for her works across several mediums.
