The pandemic has brought many local student activities to a halt, but not It’s Academic! According to Mr. Jeremy Hillyard, who coaches the Easton High It’s Academic team, the show holds the Guinness World Record for the longest running TV quiz show in history, since 1961!
Easton’s It’s Academic team membersDesmond Fitzroy (captain), Harrison Fike, and Anna Lesher recently won a televised competition against Catonsville High School and the Friends School of Baltimore. The show was taped via Zoom on October 10 and aired on WJZ-TV on Saturday November 7 at 10:00 a.m. It is posted on the WJZ website at https://baltimore.cbslocal.com/category/its-academic/
“In all honesty, I didn’t think we were going to win until the final scores were announced,” explains Anna Lesher, Easton High junior and It’s Academic Team member. It was a really good game, and I think we played really well! This is definitely an experience that I will look forward to hopefully doing again in the future!”
Easton High scored a total of 350 points in the competition, Friends came in second with 290 and Catonsville scored 260. The team practices weekly throughout the school year and students often study and test themselves on their own time.
“I am so incredibly proud of this team! I have coached this team for the past ten years at Easton High School and it is such a pleasure to coach it,” said Mr. Hillyard enthusiastically. “I love that the whole team is intelligent, respectful, and dedicated at all times. The fact these are students truly enjoy learning is already a winning quality, as their intellectual curiosities will serve them well throughout their lifetime. Many congratulations to them!”
