A timely and informative program, “Presidential Candidates’ Health Care Plans: Everything you want to know,” will be presented on Thursday, November 14, at Prager Family Auditorium, 17 S. Washington St., 7-8:30 PM.
Healthcare either tops or very nearly tops our list of concerns. Healthcare costs are not only our primary source of bankruptcy, they are double the average of industrialized nations and accompanied by relatively poor rankings for access and outcomes.
Several presidential candidates favor moving toward a single-payer system, but few have shared details of how their plans might work. Presenters Michael Hash and Patricia Neuman look forward to helping us understand elements of these plans and how they might work.
Few have more experience in healthcare education, administration, and reform than Michael Hash. He served from 1990 to 1995 as a Staff Associate for the House Subcommittee on Health and Environment and as an Administrator of the Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) from 1998 through 2000. Then as Deputy Director and then Director of the Office of Health Reform from 2009 until his retirement in 2014, he coordinated Affordable Care Act reforms and provided outreach to Congress.
Prior to his federal appointments, Hash held teaching positions at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities. He also served as Deputy Director of the American Hospital Association and as Principal of Health Policy Alternatives, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in policy and financing issues.
Copresenter Patricia Neuman is Senior Vice President of the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, where she is Director of its Medicare Policy Project and focuses upon a broad range of issues including prescription drug costs and Medicare–for-all options. She has also served in staff positions on the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health in the House of Representatives and the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
The Balanced Budget Act of 1999 and the Affordable Care Act made substantial strides in fighting waste, fraud, and abuse and covering millions more of us, but work clearly remains. This program is focused upon helping us understand the options being offered, and questions will be welcomed following the presentation.
Sponsored by the Talbot County Democratic Forum, this event is free and open to the public, and the Prager Family Auditorium is ADA compliant. For more information, please contact [email protected].
